How Soon Should My Child Start Preparing for the SAT?
-- by Jean Burk

I personally believe ALL 9th graders should learn how to take the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT. (The longer a student waits, the less time they have to improve.) Scoring high on these tests can not only result in getting into the college of their choice, but also can bring incredible scholarships. Most students wait until they are a junior or senior to start thinking about preparing for these tests. BIG Mistake!

The key to doing well on these tests is to learn the recurring patterns, hidden strategies and the test-taking techniques on how to conquer each question type. After learning these, then PRACTICING is the key. Students who make these tests a priority long before they count will have better success because they are able to pick out the patterns quicker and therefore answer the questions in a timelier manner. (Most students do not finish all the questions in each section.)

By learning the keys of the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT as early as ninth grade, students will have time to spend up to a couple of hours a week learning to find the recurring patterns on the test identifying weaknesses; this will make taking the test old hat when it really counts. They can also avoid cramming at the last minute using this information and lessen text anxiety because they can know and understand the tests.

Because we started researching how to do well on the PSAT when my son was in 9th grade, he became a National Merit Scholar and we literally threw away seven trash bags full of college offers. (full-tuition, room and board, graduate money, study-abroad stipends, etc.)These offers came from numerous colleges. Ouachita Baptist, with a tuition of $80,000, is where my son and daughter chose to attend. There is no way we could have ever afforded that kind of college money.

Jean Burk is the author of College Prep Genius and has written numerous articles about the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT. She has been featured as an SAT expert on Good Day Dallas (Fox 4) and KXAS (NBC 5). She currently travels and speaks about the importance of college preparation, how to get free college and teaches her “Master the SAT” Prep Class all over Texas. Both her children received incredible scholarships because of their PSAT and SAT scores. Her teaching DVD was released in the summer of 2008. The first edition of her brand new VocabCafé Book Series, “The Summer of Saint Nick” is now out. These books are intended to help teenagers and younger children increase their knowledge of SAT-level vocabulary words.  College Prep Genius is a HEART of Texas partner, and offers HEART of Texas members discounts on their materials.  For more information, visit www.collegeprepgenius.com

Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County Seeks Homeschool Volunteers
by Julie Donovan and Pam Bagby

Meals on Wheels,, Inc. of Tarrant County is a community based agency that provides meals to the homebound in Tarrant County.  Delivering meals is a great service learning opportunity, and we welcome students, along with adults, to be involved in the meal delivery.  Our clients depend on volunteers to deliver hot, nutritious meals along with care and compassion.

Weekly volunteers select on weekday to drive at the lunch hour.  Meals are picked up from local neighborhood sites and delivered to homes within close proximity.  Delivery typically takes about one hour after meal pick up.  Meals On Wheels, Inc. needs your help in order to continue this much-needed service to the homebound residents in your neighborhood.

Several home school families currently volunteer for our program.

If you need additional information or a speaker for a presentation, please contact us.  Together, we can make Tarrant County a caring place to grow old.

Here are some details about the program.

1.  Meals On Wheels provides training, an established route, and hot, nutritious meals to deliver.

2.  You volunteer your time and the use of your car.

3.  One lunch hour a week, you pick up your meals at a distribution site near your home and make deliveries to clients.

4.  Sixty minutes later, you're feeling great that several Tarrant County neighbros received a hot meal . . . often the only one they'll have that day.  Time invested with Meals On Wheels helps improve the quality of life in Tarrant County and pays big dividends.  Like those who currently serve as drivers, you'll get a personal lift from being part of a team that makes a real difference in our community.

From a Homeschool Mom's Perspective - by Trudi L.
Benson (age 10) and I started delivering meals when he was two years old.   It's been a very rewarding experience.  We both have learned so much and met some really nice people along the way.  I incorporate our volunteer activities into our daily lessons.

Math:  We count the number of clients, meals, and milks on a route sheet; use a lot of addition and subtraction.

Reading and Spelling:  Letters and words are everywhere on a route sheet.

Science and Health:  We've learned about diabetes and good nutrition.  We also talk about different disabilities.

Social Studies/Geography: We interact with people from different socioeconomic groups.  as we deliver meals, we discuss surrounding terrain, lakes, rivers, and teh weather.  Map reading skills are also developed.

Community Service:  By providing hot, nutritious meals, we help a lot of people in our community.

Contact Meals on Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County to schedule a tour of the central kitchen and learn more about this essential community program.

Julie Donovan and Pam Bagby are Coordinators of Volunteer Recruitment for Meals On Wheels, Inc. of
Tarrant County.  They are available to give presentations to your group and can be contacted at 817-336-0912.

5.  TEXAS STATE FISH-ART CONTEST

ENTRIES DUE MARCH 31, 2009 (ongoing annual contest)

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is the official host for the Texas State-Fish Art Contest sponsored by Wildlife Forever. All Texas entries in the annual contest are to be sent to TFFC for judging. Winning Texas entries will be forwarded to Wildlife Forever to compete for national best of show and art of conservation stamp honors.

Who Can Participate:  All Texas students in grades 4 through 12.

Categories: State-Fish Art Contest entries are judged in three categories: grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. One Texas winner from each category is selected each year.

Winners are invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Minnesota's Mall of America each summer. Winning designs will be featured on the official State-Fish Art website. One piece of artwork in each grade category will be selected as the national best of show winner, and one entry will be chosen as the annual art of conservation stamp award and be featured on Wildlife Forever's conservation stamp for the coming year. Entries must be postmarked by March 31 each year and must comply with all rules and regulations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.

How to Enter:  Students must create an illustration of the Texas state fish or one of the other state fishes and write a composition on its behavior, habitat and conservation. Texas students are encouraged, but not required, to depict the Texas state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Texas entries are judged only against other Texas entries no matter what fish is depicted.

About the Contest:  The State-Fish Art Contest is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas' aquatic resources. We also offer you the choice to use our free lesson plan.

8.  CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS TEEN COURT

Teen Court benefits both youth and community by providing an alternative method of adjudicating juvenile offenders and allowing teen volunteers to learn about the judicial system, while documenting Community Service hours.

Who Can Volunteer:  Full time students ages 13-18 who are in PUBLIC, PRIVATE OR HOME SCHOOLS.

Volunteers may serve as jurors for our Teen Court sessions, or once trained, can act as a defense attorney or prosecutor in our Teen Court trials.

Teen Defendants are held responsible for their behavior while giving them the opportunity to participate in and become knowledgeable about the judicial system. Juvenile Offenders "pay" for their offense(s) by performing community service and participating in Teen Court. Volunteer teen attorneys present offender's cases to a jury of their peers.

Upon successful completion of the program, offender's cases are dismissed and do not appear on their permanent records.

Teen Court alleviates the strain on the regular court system, besides giving juvenile offenders a second chance. The program also provides youths in the area a chance to participate in the judicial process.

9.  TEXAS HOME SCHOOL COALITION GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD PROGRAM

Do you ever scratch your head when thinking about how to fulfill the requirement of a "study of good citizenship"?  THSC offers a Good Citizenship Program, which rewards students for their participation in the political process and helps them fulfill that requirement.

Certificates are printed, upon request, for students who have volunteered at least forty hours in Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process, in any combination.

Each year the program culminates with rewards presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.

The volunteer hours may be tracked on a form that can be downloaded and printed as often as needed. Students will be granted eight hours for each Capitol Day attended.

Please note that, while certificates will be issued upon request at any time, the awards will be given based on hours worked between April 1, 2008, and April 1, 2009. The forms must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 1 if students are to be considered for awards.

What is a course in good citizenship:  For a detailed description, please visit:  http://www.thsc.org/good_citizen/good_citizenship_program.asp

The Good Citizenship Certificates and Awards
THSC has instituted an ongoing program to recognize home school students who participate in good citizenship activities with its Good Citizenship Certificate.  This certificate will be awarded to each student who participates with at least forty (40) hours of volunteer work in any combination from the following areas:  Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process.

Home school students may be awarded THSC Good Citizenship Certificates at any time following the completion of 40 hours of good citizenship work.

Any home schooled student who earns a Good Citizenship Certificate is automatically entered into the competition for THSC’s Good Citizenship Awards.  The following awards recognize the Texas students with the most volunteer hours (highest number of voters registered for the Alamo Award) in each category and are presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.

Alamo Award
New voters can be registered most easily when an adult becomes a deputy voter registrar.  The parent or support group member can then work with home school students as a deputy voter registrar to take voter registration cards to people who fill  them in and give them to the deputy voter registrar.  These completed cards will then be delivered by the deputy voter registrar to the voter registrar of the county.  Home school students can use meetings of support groups, church meetings, and other gathering to register new voters.  Deputy voter registrars will be responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Alamo Good Citizenship Award to the student who registers the most new voters in Texas for each year.

Ranger Award
Credit for the certificate may also be earned by volunteer work in the campaign of candidates for public office.  Any local, state, or federal campaign qualifies for this effort.  Campaign officials are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Ranger Good Citizenship Award to the student with the most hours of volunteer work in political campaigns.

Lone Star Award
Home school students may earn credit for good citizenship in the political party process by volunteering to help at precinct, county/senatorial, or state conventions or other political party functions of their chosen political party.  Political party officers are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Lone Star Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours in the category of the political party process in Texas.

Republic Award
Finally, credit for this certificate may also be earned by students who are involved in the legislative process at any local, state, or federal level.  Time spent in working for or against any particular issue qualifies.  Parents or leaders of any group working on such issues are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Republic Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours each year in the category of the legislative process.

The THSC Good Citizenship Certificates will be mailed to students upon receipt of verification from the officials documenting the hours.  The Alamo, Ranger, Lone Star & Republic Awards will be given to winners at the THSC Awards Banquet held each year.

11.  ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION

The 2008 competition is over, but will be held again in Spring 2009.

"An Artistic Discovery" is the annual nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  Each Congressional District may host its own competition, and since the competition was first launched in 1982, hundreds of thousands of students have participated in over 5000 locally conducted contests.

This spring, several North Texas Congressional offices will hold contests.  The winning student from each district will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year! In addition, the winners and their two guests are invited to the nation's capital in the summer to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the winning artists from across the country and opening the 2008 "An Artistic Discovery" exhibition.  Thousands of people visiting the nation's capitol, as well as Members of Congress and their staffs, are able to walk through the exhibit daily, viewing artwork from Congressional districts throughout the country—each piece highlighted with the name of the work and student artist.

Interested students and teachers should contact their congressional office ASAP for more information.

21.  HOMESCHOOL HERITAGE DOMUS SCHOLA

Dear Homeschoolers interested in Latin for High School,

As some of you know I have been teaching basic Latin to a few students the last couple of years.  To be honest, I only took 2 years of Latin in high school some 30 years ago, so I am basically learning this subject as I go along.  Anyway, I had heard about the following crash course in Latin a few years back and would just love to attend in order to be a better teacher for my own children.  My biggest problem is traveling across country with a nursing baby!

I would love to try to host this in our area, but I would have to have at least 12 people interested in such a course.  The recommended age is 16 through adult, and the price is $500 for one week of intensive Latin.  The entire 40 chapters of Wheelock's Latin (a text used in many colleges) is covered in 5 days.  This text is covered in 2 semesters (1 year) of college with 6 credit hours given.  High Schools using Wheelocks usually spend 2 years getting through Wheelocks Latin.

I am just looking into this, but email me back at corina@
familychurch.org if you would be interested, or send this to other homeschoolers who might want something like this locally.

Blessings,

Corina Treece

Over 3600 acres, the FWNC&R is the largest city-owned nature center in the United States and offers residents and visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural history of north central Texas.  Over 20 miles of hiking trails provide easy access to a myriad of natural wonders to be found on the Refuge.

But that glowing nose comes in very handy when Santa needs someone to save Christmas by serving as a beacon to guide his sleigh. Join Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Comet, Cupid and all the other reindeer as Rudolph captures their admiration and proves he is a true Christmas hero.

FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 8 -- Miss Nelson is Missing!
The students in room 207 just won’t follow the rules and are not being respectful to their teacher, Miss Nelson. One morning, Miss Nelson is mysteriously missing from school, which makes her students believe they have succeeded in driving her away. Their celebration quickly ends when the substitute teacher, the mean and scary Miss Viola Swamp, descends upon the classroom. You’ll love what happens next in this new musical based upon the popular children’s books by Harry Allard and James Marshall.

APRIL 3 - 19 -- Rockin' with Mother Goose
See Jack & Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Beep and more of those beloved characters as we present the classic Mother Goose rhymes to upbeat, catchy music. There are little life lessons tucked into each song to help teach children about good manners, safety and responsibility. Developed by local artists Brad Jackson and Alex Vorse, this world premiere musical puts a new spin on the classics to make your favorite rhymes come alive.

MAY 1 - 17 -- A Year with Frog & Toad
The Tony Award-nominated adaptation of the beloved Arnold Lobel classic stories where cheery Frog and grumpy Toad leap off the page to the stage just in time for blossoming, bird-chirping spring. With hilarious and tender songs inspired by snazzy jazzy music, this charming musical comedy gloriously suggests that having a very best friend for flying kites, racing sleds and baking cookies, is as good as it gets.

Thank you for your response to the homeschool theater discounts being offered in the Dallas area through Dallas Summer Muscials.

Homeschoolers were able to get group rates for  performances to STOMP, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd and CIRQUE ELOIZE: RAIN.

We did not get enough interest expressed to do an offer for The Color Purple at the Texas State Fair so will not have an offer for that show.

Last year, over 200 homeschoolers attended The Lion King. Watch for more homeschool theater offers in the future. We also have theater discounts available in Houston, San Antonio and Austin.

Please contact Susan Frederick with questions: sjf@jsoft.com or visit the Dallas theater page at Taffie's website http://www.jsoft.com/archive/taffie/Dallastheater.html

SEPTEMBER 20 - JANUARY 11 (2009) -- Sentimental Journey: The Art of Alfred Jacob Miller
Embark on a captivating visual adventure in this special exhibition of paintings and drawings by Alfred Jacob Miller (1810–1874), the first American artist to journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. See his first-hand depictions of the Lakota, Shoshone, and Nez Perces he encountered, and meet the last of the true fur trappers and traders of the nineteenth-century American West.

NOVEMBER 15 - FEBRUARY 15, 2009 -- Mary Lucier:  the Plains of Sweet Regret
Enter a hauntingly beautiful world of landscape and loss in a video installation that brings into view, through music and imagery, the rapid depopulation of the northern plains.  Laced with both melancholy and loveliness, this work by video artist Marcy Lulcier examines the seismic changes that have swept away family farms, and ranches, small towns, and rural schools.

50.  DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITS

COMING OCTOBER 3, 2008!
Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs
October 3, 2008–May 17, 2009

Opening on October 3, 2008, at the Dallas Museum of Art, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohsprovides insight into the life of Tutankhamun and other royals of the 18th Dynasty (1555–1305 B.C.). All of the treasures in the exhibition are between 3,300 and 3,500 years old.

Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty and ruled during a crucial, turmoil-filled period of Egyptian history. The boy king died under mysterious circumstances around age 18 or 19, in the ninth year of his reign (1323 B.C.).

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs offers glimpses of that evolving period. On display are fifty of Tutankhamun’s burial objects, including his royal diadem — the gold crown discovered encircling the head of his mummified body that he likely wore as king — and one of the gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs.

More than seventy additional objects from tombs of 18th Dynasty royals, as well as several non-royal individuals, are also exhibited. These stone, faience, and wood pieces from burial sites before Tut’s reign give visitors a sense of what the lost burials of other royalty and commoners may have been like.

51.  KIMBALL ART MUSEUM EXHIBITS

JUNE 29 – NOVEMBER 2 -- The Impressionists
One of the world’s greatest collections of Impressionist art will be on view this summer!

The loan of about 90 paintings from Chicago’s world-renowned Impressionist collection is possible because of an ambitious reinstallation and expansion project at the Art Institute that includes extensive renovation of the galleries and the construction of a new Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano—the architect recently chosen by the Kimbell to design its own second building. The Art Institute’s Impressionist collection has never before left Chicago in such a large group, and it will be shown exclusively at the Kimbell.

The Impressionists: Master Paintings from the Art Institute of Chicago will be a feast for the eyes more sumptuous than even the great Barnes Collection exhibition, seen at the Kimbell in 1994. It features masterpieces of painting by the world’s most beloved artists, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec—a succession of geniuses who, through a miracle of history, worked largely in the same country and within the span of a single lifetime. They were painters of modern life who created a more complete and delightful picture of the world in which they lived than any artists before them or since. Carried forward by the so-called “Post-Impressionists”—represented in the exhibition by masterpieces by Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin—the Impressionist movement fostered breathtakingly original pictorial idioms that ushered in the progressive art of the 20th century.

The exhibition will bring to Fort Worth works that have come to define the Impressionist achievement—paintings that will be familiar even to those who have never visited the Art Institute since they have been so widely disseminated through reproductions.

They include Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) by Gustave Caillebotte; 7 Cézannes, including Madame Cézanne in a Yellow Chair (1893/95) and The Bathers (1899/1904); 6 works by Degas, including Yellow Dancers (In the Wings) (1874/76) and The Millinery Shop (1884/90); 7 Gauguins, including The Arlésiennes (1888) and The Ancestors of Tehamana (1893); 5 Van Goghs, including Self-Portrait (1887) and The Bedroom (1889); 7 Manets, including The Races at Longchamp (1866) and Woman Reading (1878/79); 26 Monets, including 6 paintings of wheatstacks, 4 of London, and 3 of water lilies; 12 Renoirs, including Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise (1875), Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando (1879), and Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881); and 3 Toulouse-Lautrecs, including Moulin de la Galette (1889).

52.  MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE

MAY 24 - SEPTEMBER 1 -- Eyes On Earth (Traveling Exhibit)
Far beyond the atmosphere of Earth, at orbits ranging from 180 to over 22,000 miles above sea level, circle the satellites of the Earth Observing System (EOS), NASA’s primary satellite mission. This small group of man-made scientific observers is constantly scanning our planet--tracking weather, monitoring pollution, creating maps, and gathering information that helps scientists predict storms, monitor forest fires, and study the holes in the ozone layer.

EYES ON EARTH is a new, highly interactive science exhibition that focuses on the EOS and examines how satellite observations are made and what we can learn about the Earth using space technology. Designed primarily for families and school groups (upper elementary through adults), visitors learn what a satellite is, discover the different types of orbits, and explore cutting-edge technology similar to that used by EOS scientists.

EYES ON EARTH brings these concepts “down to earth” through a combination of fun, accessible interactives in a playful and “spacey” environment. The exhibit explores the basics of satellites, orbits, and satellite technology.

COMING FALL 2009:  CSI:  The Experience

Imagine entering a crime scene and being the one responsible for noticing and collecting every trace of evidence. The pressure is on: you know the analysis of your evidence must be scientifically sound to crack the case.  You've seen the hit television crime drama, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on CBS. Now, there's a forensic science exhibit related to the TV show, as well as a Web-based learning adventure.

CSI: The Experience is a completely immersive exhibit that invites visitors to enter "crime" scenes where they identify and record evidence. It takes them inside "laboratories" for scientific testing and to "autopsy" rooms for pathology analysis. Then it returns them to the "office" to build their case, based on the scientific evidence. The exhibit brings to life real scientific principles and the most advanced scientific techniques used today by crime scene investigators and forensic scientists.

From DNA and firearms analysis to forensic anthropology and toxicology, visitors will be immersed in hands-on science in an exciting multi-media environment with dazzling special effects direct from the CSI TV series. Cast members from the TV show welcome guests into the exhibit from a large video monitor, lead them through the experience, and praise them for a job well done at the end. The exhibit is geared toward adults and youth ages 12 and above.

Mummies:  Secrets of the Pharaohs – Opening Late Summer 2008
Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs unravels some of the mysteries enshrouding the ancient royal mummies; how they were embalmed and where they were hidden; and also recreates the dramatic story of their recovery. It’s an Indiana Jones-type tale of tomb-raiders and hidden treasure that led to one of the most significant archaeological finds in modern history.

Mummies takes viewers on a journey back thousands of years, to the age of the great pharaohs, to explore why mummification was so vital to ancient Egyptian life. Surprisingly, the techniques and ingredients used for mummifying have only been pieced together in the last 15 years, after a 2,000-year memory lapse.  The film then leaps ahead to the 1800s, when Mummies dramatically recreates the incredible events surrounding the late 19th century discovery of a cache of 40 royal mummies, including 12 Kings of Egypt, in a single tomb. Among them were three of the greatest pharaohs that ever lived: the legendary Rameses the Great—considered to be the pharaoh of the Exodus and perhaps the only face the world can see from the Bible—his father Seti I, and his son.  Prior to that, not even one pharaoh had ever been found.  Believed by many to be the ultimate archaeological find, it was uncovered a full four decades before Howard Carter found the intact tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamen.

Interwoven throughout the film’s historic narrative is a modern-day forensic story, a scientific journey to extract clues about our past that could have an impact on our future.  More than a decade ago, Dr. Brier and a colleague used the clues he had assembled to perform the first human mummification in the Egyptian style since the time of the pharaohs.  Now, in the film, he and a DNA specialist check in on the progress of that modern mummy and conduct key genetic testing.  The forensic aspect of the film includes a scientific first—a discovery that could help researchers understand how ancient diseases have evolved into modern-day counterparts. Perhaps the DNA held in mummies like Rameses will be able to help to cure people today.

62.  ELITE TRACK CLUB/CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM

Over hill & dale to Kansas we go… all the way to the finish line.
We’re ready for another year of off-road fun. With more than 20 years of coaching experience at all levels and ages from 6-21, I feel confident in getting any runner ready for the trials of cross country running. With personal bests of 9:06 (2M), 14:32 (5k), & 30:10 (10k), along with all-state & all-conference awards in high school and college, I have the personal experience of being a top-level runner as well.

My goal this season is to provide an opportunity to run @ the fabled Rim Rock Farm (http://rimrockfarm.net/) in Lawrence, Kansas. The USA Track & Field National Jr. Olympic XC Meet will be there on December 8th, & I’d like to help as many local XC athletes as possible have this nearly once-in-a-lifetime experience that I had back in 1987 as a senior @ UTA. This is true cross country!
