THSC's Tim Lambert Questions Tarrant County Colleges's Home School Transcript Policy

Tarrant County College's transcript policy has been the cause of concern for several homeschooling families.

The school's policy of requiring a notarized transcript from home schoolers prompted Texas Home School Coalition president Tim Lambert to write a letter to the Director of Admissions and Records expressing his concerns.

In his letter, Lambert noted that while the college's website directed homeschoolers to provide an "official transcript,"when parents and students appeared in person with their transcript they were told it had to be notarized before it could be accepted.  Lambert suggested that the school adopt a policy more in line with what other colleges require.

Recent College Board Policy Change More Friendly Toward Home School Test-Takers -- by Anne Gebhart

Home school test-takers no longer need a driver's license or passport to take the SAT/PSAT test, due to a recent College Board policy change.

Until now, the only acceptable forms of photo identification were a driver's license, state-issued ID, valid passport, or a school identification card with a picture.  Since homeschoolers do not have school-issued photo ID cards, such as those provided to public school students, they have been at a disadvantage on test day in that they have been required to provide one of the other acceptable forms of ID.

The College Board's listing of acceptable forms of photo ID now includes a more accessible and less expensive option for homeschoolers:  a Student ID Form that can be prepared by a local support group or by the local public school.

The SAT Student ID form can be downloaded from the College Board website and printed on the organization's official letterhead.  The form must be dated and accompanied by a "recognizable" photo of the student.   The student will need to sign the ID form in the presence of the organization's representative or public school principal.  The student will also be asked to sign the ID form again at the testing center to verify the signature.

The Student ID Form is valid for one year, and must be presented each time the student tests.

Legendary King Tut Exhibit Coming to Dallas October 3

"Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" is the renowned exhibition that has drawn 5 million visitors worldwide.   Currently on view in London, the exhibition returns to the United States in a three-city encore tour opening at the Dallas Museum of Art, October 3, 2008-May 17, 2009.  The other cities for the tour have not yet been announced.  The exhibition was previously presented at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Contemporary Art, the Field Museum in Chicago, the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, and The Franklin  in Philadelphia.

"Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" explores the figures who guided ancient Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.  The exhibition focuses on the 18th Dynasty, a 100-year period when Egypt was at the height of its power and the "golden age" of Egyptian artistry.  This was the era when Tutankhamun and his ancestors reigned.  The extensive array of more than 130 extraordinary artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun and other ancient Egyptian sites features 50 of Tutankhamun's burial objects, including his royal diadem and one of the four gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs.

Also, don't forget to fill out an emergency notification form from the website (http://www.eventkeeper.com/code/events.cfm?curOrg=BEDFORD)     and turn it in with your essay. 11.  CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS TEEN COURT

Teen Court benefits both youth and community by providing an alternative method of adjudicating juvenile offenders and allowing teen volunteers to learn about the judicial system, while documenting Community Service hours.

Who Can Volunteer:  Full time students ages 13-18 who are in PUBLIC, PRIVATE OR HOME SCHOOLS.

Volunteers may serve as jurors for our Teen Court sessions, or once trained, can act as a defense attorney or prosecutor in our Teen Court trials.

Teen Defendants are held responsible for their behavior while giving them the opportunity to participate in and become knowledgeable about the judicial system. Juvenile Offenders "pay" for their offense(s) by performing community service and participating in Teen Court. Volunteer teen attorneys present offender's cases to a jury of their peers.

Upon successful completion of the program, offender's cases are dismissed and do not appear on their permanent records.

Teen Court alleviates the strain on the regular court system, besides giving juvenile offenders a second chance. The program also provides youths in the area a chance to participate in the judicial process.

12.  TEXAS HOME SCHOOL COALITION GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD PROGRAM

Do you ever scratch your head when thinking about how to fulfill the requirement of a "study of good citizenship"?  THSC offers a Good Citizenship Program, which rewards students for their participation in the political process and helps them fulfill that requirement.

Certificates are printed, upon request, for students who have volunteered at least forty hours in Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process, in any combination.

Each year the program culminates with rewards presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.

The volunteer hours may be tracked on a form that can be downloaded and printed as often as needed. Students will be granted eight hours for each Capitol Day attended.

Please note that, while certificates will be issued upon request at any time, the awards will be given based on hours worked between April 1, 2008, and April 1, 2009. The forms must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 1 if students are to be considered for awards.

What is a course in good citizenship:  For a detailed description, please visit:  http://www.thsc.org/good_citizen/good_citizenship_program.asp

The Good Citizenship Certificates and Awards
THSC has instituted an ongoing program to recognize home school students who participate in good citizenship activities with its Good Citizenship Certificate.  This certificate will be awarded to each student who participates with at least forty (40) hours of volunteer work in any combination from the following areas:  Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process.

Home school students may be awarded THSC Good Citizenship Certificates at any time following the completion of 40 hours of good citizenship work.

Any home schooled student who earns a Good Citizenship Certificate is automatically entered into the competition for THSC’s Good Citizenship Awards.  The following awards recognize the Texas students with the most volunteer hours (highest number of voters registered for the Alamo Award) in each category and are presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.

Alamo Award
New voters can be registered most easily when an adult becomes a deputy voter registrar.  The parent or support group member can then work with home school students as a deputy voter registrar to take voter registration cards to people who fill  them in and give them to the deputy voter registrar.  These completed cards will then be delivered by the deputy voter registrar to the voter registrar of the county.  Home school students can use meetings of support groups, church meetings, and other gathering to register new voters.  Deputy voter registrars will be responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Alamo Good Citizenship Award to the student who registers the most new voters in Texas for each year.

Ranger Award
Credit for the certificate may also be earned by volunteer work in the campaign of candidates for public office.  Any local, state, or federal campaign qualifies for this effort.  Campaign officials are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Ranger Good Citizenship Award to the student with the most hours of volunteer work in political campaigns.

Lone Star Award
Home school students may earn credit for good citizenship in the political party process by volunteering to help at precinct, county/senatorial, or state conventions or other political party functions of their chosen political party.  Political party officers are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Lone Star Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours in the category of the political party process in Texas.

Republic Award
Finally, credit for this certificate may also be earned by students who are involved in the legislative process at any local, state, or federal level.  Time spent in working for or against any particular issue qualifies.  Parents or leaders of any group working on such issues are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate.  In addition, THSC will award the Republic Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours each year in the category of the legislative process.

The THSC Good Citizenship Certificates will be mailed to students upon receipt of verification from the officials documenting the hours.  The Alamo, Ranger, Lone Star & Republic Awards will be given to winners at the THSC Awards Banquet held each year.

14.  ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION

The 2008 competition is over, but will be held again in Spring 2009.

"An Artistic Discovery" is the annual nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  Each Congressional District may host its own competition, and since the competition was first launched in 1982, hundreds of thousands of students have participated in over 5000 locally conducted contests.

This spring, several North Texas Congressional offices will hold contests.  The winning student from each district will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year! In addition, the winners and their two guests are invited to the nation's capital in the summer to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the winning artists from across the country and opening the 2008 "An Artistic Discovery" exhibition.  Thousands of people visiting the nation's capitol, as well as Members of Congress and their staffs, are able to walk through the exhibit daily, viewing artwork from Congressional districts throughout the country—each piece highlighted with the name of the work and student artist.

Interested students and teachers should contact their congressional office ASAP for more information.

18.  COOKE COUNTY COTILLION FOR HOME SCHOOLED TEENS!

Our mission is to provide our homeschooled teens an opportunity to learn etiquette, semi-formal dining etiquette, and ballroom dancing skills in a Christian environment.  We meet 8 times per season with our last cotillion of the season a formal and usually at a special location.

Cost:  $30 per family per year for registration.  Each event is $15 per teen.  We emphasize RSVP for each event.  Teens are not required to pay for an event if they are unable to attend.

This past year, our teens came from Denton, Sherman, Denison, Ft. Worth, Mansfield, Burleson, as well as Gainesville and the surrounding small communities.

22.  HOMESCHOOL HERITAGE DOMUS SCHOLA

Dear Homeschoolers interested in Latin for High School,

As some of you know I have been teaching basic Latin to a few students the last couple of years.  To be honest, I only took 2 years of Latin in high school some 30 years ago, so I am basically learning this subject as I go along.  Anyway, I had heard about the following crash course in Latin a few years back and would just love to attend in order to be a better teacher for my own children.  My biggest problem is traveling across country with a nursing baby!

I would love to try to host this in our area, but I would have to have at least 12 people interested in such a course.  The recommended age is 16 through adult, and the price is $500 for one week of intensive Latin.  The entire 40 chapters of Wheelock's Latin (a text used in many colleges) is covered in 5 days.  This text is covered in 2 semesters (1 year) of college with 6 credit hours given.  High Schools using Wheelocks usually spend 2 years getting through Wheelocks Latin.

I am just looking into this, but email me back at corina@heritagefamilychurch.org if you would be interested, or send this to other homeschoolers who might want something like this locally.

Blessings,

Corina Treece

Artisan Center Theater holds quality, "in the round" performances that are family-friendly, entertaining, and affordable! Artie's Playhouse, their Interactive Children's Theater, offers original, fun-for-all-ages productions featuring familiar characters and themes, but with fresh twists that keep it entertaining and exciting for parents as well as children. Each story has its own character focus, which is reinforced throughout the play.

The "Artie's Playhouse" productions are about 30-45 minutes long, and include lots of audience participation to hold the interest of even the youngest child in the family. The theater's full-length stage productions include musicals, comedies, and family dramas which are entertaining, as well as family-friendly. Past performances have included such classics as Godspell, Cheaper By the Dozen, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Sound of Music.

Full-Length Productions:
JULY 11 - AUGUST 2 – Don't Drink the Water
Against his own wishes to vacation on the Jersey shore playing pinochle, caterer Walter Hollander, his wife Marian, and daughter Susan, are vacationing in Russia. When they take a few too many pictures of a military base, they are mistaken for spies. Hoping to find help at the American embassy, the Hollanders encounter instead the ambassador’s son, Axel, a major klutz, and an embassy filled with madcap characters. This 1966 Woody Allen farce is sure to tickle your funny bone!

AUGUST 15 - SEPTEMBER 13 – Peter Pan (Musical)
With comedy and derring-do, a boy who won't grow up and hissably good villain, this magical musical sparkles with plenty of charm for everyone from age 4 on up. It is an ageless adventure tale for all who want to stay young forever.

SEPTEMBER 19 - OCTOBER 11 – Belles on Their Toes
The CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN family is back, but Father is gone. How the Gilbreths meet this crisis, along with the younger kids' hilarious attempts to take charge of their siblings' dating prospects, makes for great family entertainment!

OCTOBER 17 - NOVEMBER 15 -- The Book of Job (Musical)

51.  HOME SCHOOL DISCOUNT TICKETS TO DALLAS THEATER PERFORMANCES

Thank you for your response to the homeschool theater discounts being offered in the Dallas area through Dallas Summer Muscials.

Homeschoolers were able to get group rates for  performances to STOMP, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd and CIRQUE ELOIZE: RAIN.

We did not get enough interest expressed to do an offer for The Color Purple at the Texas State Fair so will not have an offer for that show.

Last year, over 200 homeschoolers attended The Lion King. Watch for more homeschool theater offers in the future. We also have theater discounts available in Houston, San Antonio and Austin.

Please contact Susan Frederick with questions: sjf@jsoft.com or visit the Dallas theater page at Taffie's website http://www.jsoft.com/archive/taffie/Dallastheater.html

52.  AMON CARTER EXHIBITS

Museum Exhibits:
JUNE 14 - AUGUST 24 -- Marsden Hartley and the West: The Search for an American Modernism
See the Southwest through the eyes of Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), one of America’s great modernists. Organized by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, this exhibition features nearly forty works from Hartley’s New Mexico period (1918–24), perhaps the most overlooked facet of his career.

JUNE 28 - OCTOBER 12 -- Revisualizing Westward Expansion: A Century of Conflict, 1800–1900
Where in the West are we? Chart your course through this group of seventeen rare nineteenth-century maps that reveal how cartography helped us find our way as a country.

MAY 17 - OCTOBER 26 -- Nell Dorr: From Everlasting to Everlasting
Experience more than fifty photographs in this first-ever comprehensive survey of the work of Nell Dorr (1893–1988), one of the most spiritual and empathetic photographic artists of the twentieth century. Dorr is known for dedicating much of her life to photographing mothers and their children.

SEPTEMBER 20 - JANUARY 11 (2009) -- Sentimental Journey: The Art of Alfred Jacob Miller
Embark on a captivating visual adventure in this special exhibition of paintings and drawings by Alfred Jacob Miller (1810–1874), the first American artist to journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. See his first-hand depictions of the Lakota, Shoshone, and Nez Perces he encountered, and meet the last of the true fur trappers and traders of the nineteenth-century American West.

NOVEMBER 15 - FEBRUARY 15, 2009 -- Mary Lucier:  the Plains of Sweet Regret
Enter a hauntingly beautiful world of landscape and loss in a video installation that brings into view, through music and imagery, the rapid depopulation of the northern plains.  Laced with both melancholy and loveliness, this work by video artist Marcy Lulcier examines the seismic changes that have swept away family farms, and ranches, small towns, and rural schools.

53.  DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITS

COMING OCTOBER 3, 2008!
Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs
October 3, 2008–May 17, 2009

Opening on October 3, 2008, at the Dallas Museum of Art, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohsprovides insight into the life of Tutankhamun and other royals of the 18th Dynasty (1555–1305 B.C.). All of the treasures in the exhibition are between 3,300 and 3,500 years old.

Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty and ruled during a crucial, turmoil-filled period of Egyptian history. The boy king died under mysterious circumstances around age 18 or 19, in the ninth year of his reign (1323 B.C.).

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs offers glimpses of that evolving period. On display are fifty of Tutankhamun’s burial objects, including his royal diadem — the gold crown discovered encircling the head of his mummified body that he likely wore as king — and one of the gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs.

More than seventy additional objects from tombs of 18th Dynasty royals, as well as several non-royal individuals, are also exhibited. These stone, faience, and wood pieces from burial sites before Tut’s reign give visitors a sense of what the lost burials of other royalty and commoners may have been like.

54.  KIMBALL ART MUSEUM EXHIBITS

JUNE 29 – NOVEMBER 2 -- The Impressionists
One of the world’s greatest collections of Impressionist art will be on view this summer!

The loan of about 90 paintings from Chicago’s world-renowned Impressionist collection is possible because of an ambitious reinstallation and expansion project at the Art Institute that includes extensive renovation of the galleries and the construction of a new Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano—the architect recently chosen by the Kimbell to design its own second building. The Art Institute’s Impressionist collection has never before left Chicago in such a large group, and it will be shown exclusively at the Kimbell.

The Impressionists: Master Paintings from the Art Institute of Chicago will be a feast for the eyes more sumptuous than even the great Barnes Collection exhibition, seen at the Kimbell in 1994. It features masterpieces of painting by the world’s most beloved artists, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec—a succession of geniuses who, through a miracle of history, worked largely in the same country and within the span of a single lifetime. They were painters of modern life who created a more complete and delightful picture of the world in which they lived than any artists before them or since. Carried forward by the so-called “Post-Impressionists”—represented in the exhibition by masterpieces by Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin—the Impressionist movement fostered breathtakingly original pictorial idioms that ushered in the progressive art of the 20th century.

The exhibition will bring to Fort Worth works that have come to define the Impressionist achievement—paintings that will be familiar even to those who have never visited the Art Institute since they have been so widely disseminated through reproductions.

They include Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) by Gustave Caillebotte; 7 Cézannes, including Madame Cézanne in a Yellow Chair (1893/95) and The Bathers (1899/1904); 6 works by Degas, including Yellow Dancers (In the Wings) (1874/76) and The Millinery Shop (1884/90); 7 Gauguins, including The Arlésiennes (1888) and The Ancestors of Tehamana (1893); 5 Van Goghs, including Self-Portrait (1887) and The Bedroom (1889); 7 Manets, including The Races at Longchamp (1866) and Woman Reading (1878/79); 26 Monets, including 6 paintings of wheatstacks, 4 of London, and 3 of water lilies; 12 Renoirs, including Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise (1875), Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando (1879), and Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881); and 3 Toulouse-Lautrecs, including Moulin de la Galette (1889).

55.  MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE

MAY 24 - SEPTEMBER 1 -- Eyes On Earth (Traveling Exhibit)
Far beyond the atmosphere of Earth, at orbits ranging from 180 to over 22,000 miles above sea level, circle the satellites of the Earth Observing System (EOS), NASA’s primary satellite mission. This small group of man-made scientific observers is constantly scanning our planet--tracking weather, monitoring pollution, creating maps, and gathering information that helps scientists predict storms, monitor forest fires, and study the holes in the ozone layer.

EYES ON EARTH is a new, highly interactive science exhibition that focuses on the EOS and examines how satellite observations are made and what we can learn about the Earth using space technology. Designed primarily for families and school groups (upper elementary through adults), visitors learn what a satellite is, discover the different types of orbits, and explore cutting-edge technology similar to that used by EOS scientists.

EYES ON EARTH brings these concepts “down to earth” through a combination of fun, accessible interactives in a playful and “spacey” environment. The exhibit explores the basics of satellites, orbits, and satellite technology.
