ATTORNEY SHELBY SHARP (ARLINGTON VS. LEEPER) SPEAKING IN CEDAR HILL
Christian Homeschool Alliance of Texas (CHAT) cordially invites you to hear Shelby Sharpe (general legal counsel to THSC)
Time: 7:00p.m.
Location: High Pointe Baptist Church
101 High Pointe Lane
Cedar Hill
Details: Shelby Sharpe was the lead attorney in the Leeper v. Arlington class action suit (1987), the landmark case that determined that home schools in Texas are private schools. This case was heard at the District and Appellate court levels and by the Texas Supreme Court. It confirmed the freedoms that parents now enjoy in Texas, one of the best states in which people can home school.
Shelby Sharpe is now the general legal counsel for Texas Home School Coalition.
Mr. Sharpe will be speaking on our nation's history of religious freedoms and their erosion. As Christians we should be aware of this heritage and be active in preserving it for our children. It's a great history lesson for the older children, also.
Childcare will be available for children ages four and under. The cost is $1 per child with a maximum cost of $3 per family.

Parental Rights: The Fight of Our Lifetime
Compiled by Jessica Hulcy
Suppose, one day, parents will NOT be allowed to tell their children…
…that they cannot do drugs or be sexually involved as an unmarried teenager?
…that they must attend church with you?
…that they are restricted from certain internet cites and DVD’s for their protection?
…that you want to know where your child is, who his friends are, and what he is doing?
Suppose, one day, parents will not be allowed to raise their children with their values but instead will be restricted by the State?
That day is here.
THE ISSUE
Our role, as parents, is critical to the health and development of our children. Researchers and scientists have found that children who have parental support are likely to have better health as adults, tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education. Teens with involved parents are one-quarter as likely as teens with "hands-off" parents to smoke, drink, and use drugs.
For years, the Supreme Court has recognized that parents have a fundamental right to raise their children as they see fit, but that support is being steadily undermined. Across the country, many judges are beginning to deny the vital role of parents in the lives of their children. Instead, they are inserting the government into a "parental" role in a child's life as the instances cited above demonstrate.
TWO THREATS
First, many U.S. judges are denying parents their rights to raise their children, either because these rights are not explicitly protected in the U.S. Constitution or because the judges believe that parental rights should be subservient to the power of the state.
Not all judges hold a low view of parental rights. Some, like Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, believe that parental rights are among the "inalienable rights" of Americans enumerated in the Declaration of Independence but they are finding it increasingly difficult to rule in favor of parental rights when it is not explicitly included in the language of the Constitution.
In Troxel v. Granville, the last major parental rights case heard by the Supreme Court, Scalia himself voted to deny parental rights the status of an enforceable constitutional right. And other federal court judges are following in his footsteps, citing a mounting belief that no right can be protected by the federal courts unless explicitly stated in the Constitution.
Second, parental rights face the threat of international law, which assumes that the rights of children must be asserted against the rights of their parents. Under our Constitution, international treaties - such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) - become part of the "supreme law of the land," allowing the government, not the parent, to determine what is best for the child and intervene on their behalf.
SOLUTION
If Scalia, who favors parental rights, yet cannot protect parental rights unless it is explicit language in the Constitution…THEN the surest way to protect children and their parents from both the threat of judges and the danger of international law is to pass a U.S. Constitutional amendment that explicitly places parental rights in the Constitution in black-and-white. And it can be done. The Constitution has 27 Amendments, the last one being passed in 1992. Only then can we ensure the next generation of American parents will enjoy the liberties we now enjoy.

3. TEXAS STATE FISH-ART CONTEST
ENTRIES DUE MARCH 31, 2008
The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is the official host for the Texas State-Fish Art Contest sponsored by Wildlife Forever. All Texas entries in the annual contest are to be sent to TFFC for judging. Winning Texas entries will be forwarded to Wildlife Forever to compete for national best of show and art of conservation stamp honors.
Who Can Participate: All Texas students in grades 4 through 12.
Categories: State-Fish Art Contest entries are judged in three categories: grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. One Texas winner from each category is selected each year.
Winners are invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Minnesota's Mall of America each summer. Winning designs will be featured on the official State-Fish Art website. One piece of artwork in each grade category will be selected as the national best of show winner, and one entry will be chosen as the annual art of conservation stamp award and be featured on Wildlife Forever's conservation stamp for the coming year. Entries must be postmarked by March 31 each year and must comply with all rules and regulations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.

LECTURE SERIES
JANUARY 17 ---- Documenting the Republic: The Texas Legation Papers"
Time: 7:00 pm
Last year, TCU became the new home of the Texas Legation Papers, a collection of nearly three hundred letters, which consist primarily of letters written to the Republic of Texas's diplomatic representatives in Washington, D.C. and include correspondence from such legendary figures as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. The letters fill in many gaps in our knowledge of the crucial early years of the Republic of Texas. In his talk, Gregg Cantrell will offer a glimpse into these papers and share some of the fascinating stories of early Texas history that are emerging from them.
About Gregg Cantrell: Gregg Cantrell received his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University in 1988. He is the first holder of the Erma and Ralph Lowe Chair in Texas History at TCU, where he has taught since 2003. Professor Cantrell is the author of numerous books and articles devoted to Texas history, including The History of Texas, the leading college-level Texas history textbook. He is also general editor of the Texas Legation Papers.

- In the early
1980s, a landmark parental rights case
reached the Washington State Supreme Court.
The case involved 13-year-old Sheila Marie
Sumey, whose parents were alarmed when they
found evidence of their daughter's
participation in illegal drug activity and
escalating sexual involvement. Their
response was to act immediately to cut off
the negative influences in their daughter's
life by grounding her.
But when Sheila went to her school counselors complaining about her parent's actions, she was advised that she could be liberated from her parents because there was "conflict between parent and child." Listening to the advice she had received, Sheila notified Child Protective Services (CPS) about her situation. She was subsequently removed from her home and placed in foster care.
Her parents, desperate to get their daughter back, challenged the actions of the social workers in court. They lost. Even though the judge found that Sheila's parents had enforced reasonable rules in a proper manner, the state law nevertheless gave CPS the authority to split apart the Sumey family and take Sheila away.
- A
thirteen-year-old boy in Washington State
was removed from his parents after he
complained to school counselors that his
parents took him to church too often. His
school counselors had encouraged him to
call Child Protective Services with his
complaint, which led to his subsequent
removal and placement in foster care. It
was only after the parents agreed to a
judge's requirement of less-frequent church
attendance that they were able to recover
their son.
- The Wisconsin
legislature is debating this question,
“Should public libraries keep a
child’s check-out history secret from
his parents or should parents know what
books, CDs, and video tapes their children
under the age of 16 checked out of public
libraries?”
- In New Zealand a 16 year-old girl ran away from home and the parents are trying to find her. The police know where she is but they can’t tell the parents because of “privacy rights of children.”

How to Enter: Students must create an illustration of the Texas state fish or one of the other state fishes and write a composition on its behavior, habitat and conservation. Texas students are encouraged, but not required, to depict the Texas state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Texas entries are judged only against other Texas entries no matter what fish is depicted.
About the Contest: The State-Fish Art Contest is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas' aquatic resources. We also offer you the choice to use our free lesson plan.

19. PERFORMANCES AT CATS THEATER IN ARLINGTON
JANUARY 25 – FEBRUARY 3 --- Holes
Stanley is just a regular kid until he is found responsible for a crime he didn't commit. We learn about a curse that has been in his family for several generations. His bad luck lands Stanley in a very strange correctional camp in the Texas desert. The warden has all the inmates digging holes in a dry lake bed. The story weaves fascinating tall tales from local history and Stanley's family. The relationships among the juveniles in the camp develop self worth in this moving story of teen self discovery. Stanley finds a good friend, treasure, and a story worth telling.
FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 2 --- Follow That Rabbit (Auditions January 14-16)
From the moment Alice falls down a rabbit hole into the zany world of Wonderland, the fun never stops. You'll meet talking birds and animals, singing flowers, hilariously comic kings and queens . . . and find yourself attending a race where the contestants run in circles getting nowhere and everybody wins! There's a frantic tea party ruled over by the Mad Hatter; and a funny scene where Alice must deal with a pepper-sneezing Duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing tarts; and she is suddenly the accused. Here's a modern view of a classic where nonsense makes good sense. And Alice even finds a new friend: the watch-carrying White Rabbit.
MARCH 28 – APRIL 6 --- Pied Piper of Hamlin (Auditions February 11-12)
The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it's flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain...which, once the rats are gone, the Mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.
MAY 2 – 11 --- Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Open Auditions March 10-12)
2008 Fundraiser Show
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. You will be transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father – a silly inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the “tale as old as time” begins.

27. DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITS
COMING OCTOBER 3, 2008!
Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs
October 3, 2008–May 17, 2009
FEBRUARY 10 – MAY 18 --- J.M.W. Turner
Details: This will be the largest and most comprehensive retrospective ever presented in the United States of the career of J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851), one of the greatest landscape painters in the history of art. The exhibition of approximately 140 works, divided almost evenly between oils and works on paper, will include masterworks representing his extensive range of subjects—seascapes, topographical views, historical events, mythology, modern life, and scenes from his own fertile imagination. Many of these works have never been shown in the United States. The exhibition will also survey Turner’s mastery of watercolor from highly innovative and experimental sketches and studies to large-scale finished works. Among these will be Tintern Abbey (1794), The Battle of Fort Rock, Val d’Aouste, Piedmont 1796 (1815), Sunset (c.1820–1830), and Norham Castle, on the River Tweed (c. 1822–1823) from Tate Britain.
MARCH 23 – JULY 20 --- Bluebonnets and Beyond: Julian Onderdonk, American Impressionist
Details: This spring the Dallas Museum of Art will present Bluebonnets and Beyond: Julian Onderdonk, American Impressionist, celebrating the work of a great landscape artist and native son. The exhibition will be on view through July 20, 2008, in the J. E. R. Chilton and Focus Galleries.
During his short life, Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922) transformed the Texas landscape, creating indelible images of the Lone Star State.
One of William Merritt Chase’s most dazzling students at the Shinnecock Summer School in Long Island, Onderdonk brought Chase’s aesthetic of nature to an entirely new part of the American landscape. By his death at age 40, Onderdonk had been christened “The Bluebonnet Painter” in recognition of the success of his lush signature landscapes of fields of the state flower.
Onderdonk’s works command pride of place among collectors of Texas art. His scenes spawned a host of imitators who to this day have never equaled the artist’s style. The components of his technique—and its dialogue with 19th- and 20th-century American art—have never been explored in depth and he has yet to earn his place in the history of American art.
Bluebonnets and Beyond —the first sustained look at Julian Onderdonk in twenty years—will redress the balance. Not only does it showcase the complexity of Onderdonk’s own work, but it also challenges traditional classifications of regionalist and mainstream art.

We will also offer you the opportunity to meet other new homeschoolers who are sharing your experiences — both good and bad! You will meet veteran homeschoolers who can reassure you that these experiences are very normal and can help you to navigate through your first year.

Why: To learn life skills and meet other students living in Tarrant County and make friends while learning to use spare time creatively and with a parent’s supervision.
Where: Keller Lions Club, on 1709 three blocks east of Hwy. 377 in Keller

For More Information: Kathryn Schruba at K.Schruba@tcu.edu
The 4-H clubs are a family organization whose goal is to teach youth life skills and have fun while learning. The Tarrant County Extension Service provides a number of workshops to teach youth about several of the projects offered through 4-H. There are about 40 different topics in all and information can be obtained from the website at http://tarrant.tamu.edu/youth/4-H_Home.html, Or by calling 817-884-1291 to locate a club in your area.
What is 4-H?
4H provides youth an opportunity to pursue their own interests - from photography to computer science, from entrepreneurship to entomology. There are a wide range of activities to choose from. You don’t have to raise livestock to be a member of 4-H!
4H Clubs also allow young people to serve as officers and learn to conduct meetings, handle club funds, and facilitate group decision-making. In a growing number of communities, 4-H youth serve as youth representatives in municipal or county government or as members of Teen Courts. They give back to their communities. 4-H members get involved in volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor younger children and help people who are less fortunate.
A list of 4-H projects is available online: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/index.html

52. REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR HOME SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR
FEBRUARY 2, 2008 --- Home School Science Fair
Location: Collin College on Spring Creek Parkway
The North Texas District Science Fair for homeschoolers early registration
is $15 until December 17, 2006 when it increases $5.
Who Can Participate: This fair is recommended for homeschoolers 3rd - 12th grade living in
Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. When 7th grade and above
students from other counties participate in our fair, they can not advance to the
Dallas or any other regional fair.
For More Information or Other Details: Please email Michael Lastufka at lastufka@hesp.org
Details: Teachers, please encourage your students to check out our website at www.hesp.org
for information and ideas for science fair projects. Participating in a fair provides invaluable benefit to
students even if they never go into any science field. Having to stand up in front of others and tell about a
project succinctly will help a student in any field they may choose later on in life.
At least two 7th/8th graders and two 9th through 12th graders will advance
to the Dallas Regional competition in March 2007. We are seeking sponsors
for cash prizes to go with the trophies. If you know of anyone or any
business that may want to help us, please let me know.
If you are a homeschool group, we'd like to know how many children
are in your group (and which group it is) since that affects how many
students we can send on to the Dallas Regional event.
More: Getting Started
For 7th grade or above: Write your research plan before experimenting.
Also, if you are planning to use biological or hazardous materials, you
may need to fill out some ISEF forms and submit them to the DRSEF
Scientific Review Committee before experimentation begins (see
http://www.sciserv.org/isef/students/wizard/index.asp). If you have
questions, contact me. Don't let missing forms keep your student from
advancing to the bigger science fairs. The secret is to start the paper
work early!
To help you plan, here are the divisions:
Explorer: Grades 3 and 4. We expect some research with simple experiment,
poster, simple oral presentation and ability to answer one question well.
Experimentalist: Grades 5 and 6. We expect research with experiment,
poster, simple oral presentation and ability to answer two questions well.
Junior: Grades 7 and 8. We expect research with original experiment,
poster, paper, reasonable oral presentation, show knowledge of subject
answering judges' questions and having filled out the ISEF Forms.
Senior: Grades 9 to 12. We expect research with original experiment,
poster, paper, detailed oral presentation, exhibit familiarity with
subject answering judges' questions and having filled out the ISEF Forms.

59. EXPLORE UT: THE BIGGEST OPEN HOUSE IN TEXAS
MARCH 1
Time: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Location: University of Texas at Austin
Who’s Invited: K-12 Students, Teachers, and Families (everyone is welcome!)
Cost: FREE – no sign-up for activities
Details: Explore UT, a yearly event that some have called an “academic Disneyland,” is open to all the people of Texas. It makes a great Saturday outing for families and offers a special opportunity for homeschools.
Choose from more than 400 educational activities on campus. Watch water flow uphill in a hydraulics lab, learn the Russian alphabet, see world-famous paintings at the new Blanton Art Museum, march with the Longhorn Band, and more. It’s a great educational outing for the whole family.
Many schools in Texas are planning a field trip to Explore UT. Organize your own field trip with other families or a community organization. If you plan to come in a bus or van, register it online at the University’s Explore UT Web site: http://www.utexas.edu/events/exploreut/bus.html/ This helps the University plan parking and welcoming activities. (No registration necessary for private automobiles.)
By return e-mail, you will receive instructions for where to enter campus and information about arranging lunch at Jester Center for $5. Of course, you may bring sack lunches and picnic on the lawn.
The Explore UT Web site reflects 2008 activities. You can begin planning which of the 400 or more activities you wish to do. Many favorite activities from previous years will be repeated, and you’ll find new activities as well – such as building a rocket propelled by alternate energy sources, learning about Celtic life in the Iron Age, and dancing a chorus line routine from a popular Broadway show.
About mid-February, the Explore UT Web site will offer a PDF file that you can download and print. It will be the same as the printed program you get when you arrive on campus, complete with map and photos
For More Information: Check the Explore UT Web site above, contact Barbara Langham at 512-346-2261, or blangham@austin.utexas.edu, or call the University at 512-471-7753.
