Nailing the College Interview
By Jean Burk

NAILING THE COLLEGE INTERVIEW

A student’s entire future can hinge upon the success of the college interview. Those thirty minutes could be the difference between Harvard and a community college, or scholarships versus student loans. An applicant’s potential can be determined by just this one meeting. Preparation is of the utmost importance. Students can lessen the stress and heighten the success of their college interview by knowing some simple guidelines.

Appearance is key. Attire, neatness, and attitude are the first things noticed by an interviewer. Dress modestly. Shower, iron your clothes, and use light cologne. Be confident and greet the interviewer with a firm handshake. Always look him or her directly in the eye. Be in control. If a question throws you off-guard, never lose your cool.

At the interview, have your personal file with you, even if the school already has access to these important documents. Bring any finished projects relating to your proposed field of study. (If you are interested in journalism, bring published articles from your school newspaper or writing samples.) Include a smiling picture of yourself with these documents; this keeps your face on the mind of the interviewer long after you have left.

Be ready to answer a range of questions. Topics may include current events, literary works, and influential people in your life. Be descriptive. Answer with a paragraph, not just a single sentence. Always be honest, even if that means admitting ignorance. A unexpected question might ask you to describe your favorite ice cream flavor and how it represents you. Don’t let the interview become a one-sided conversation. Have questions prepared for the interviewer. Most importantly, hold a mock interview beforehand and practice with possible questions.

Prepare by researching the school’s campus life, classes and atmosphere. During the meeting, speak as if you are already planning to attend their college. (E.g., “When I go here, I’m going to join the newspaper and run for student government.”) If the interviewer fails to notice some of your best assets, feel free to bring them up. These might include your SAT score, your G.P.A., community service, and leadership skills.

Hopefully, at the end of the interview you will hear, “I think you are a good match for this school.” Don’t be surprised if the interviewer keeps silent. Most colleges’ follow-up the interview by sending their answer in the mail. Be sure to send a thank you note to the person who interviewed you. He will probably keep it next to the picture of your smiling face.

Jean Burk is a published author, speaker and teacher. She has been featured on television as an expert on the SAT and PSAT tests, College Prep and How to Get Free College. Jean is also a “completed” home school mom. Both of her children received incredible scholarships because of their PSAT and SAT scores. She has been teaching her “Master the SAT” Prep Class in the D/FW area and many surrounding cities. She also travels and speaks about her book College Prep Genius. How to Start Up or Get Involved in a Cub Scout (or Boy Scout) Program
By Jason Buescher

While this article includes information related to the Cub Scout program, these same steps would be applicable if your child is interested in pursuing Boy Scouts.

Contact An Area Representative for a Program Near You.
There are several ways to get in touch with an area representative. Just use the way that is most convenient for you! Please have the name of your city and closest major intersection ready to give us. Let us know if you are interested in forming a group with other home school families or if you want to join an existing Cub Scout Program.

  • Call our office and speak to our representative: 817-231-8502
  • Send an email: ksteffy@longhorn.org Subject Line: “I want to join Cub Scouts!”
  • Visit our website to find local Cub Scout programs near you: www.longhorncouncil.com

Why Join Cub Scouts?
  • Your time is valuable. Today’s families, more than ever, struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting helps to support your family by providing ready-made opportunities for you and your son to do things together.
  • Your son needs to belong to a group of boys his own age. Through this sense of belonging, he builds his self-esteem and learns to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups your boy joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, and physical fitness. Boy Scouts of America has been weaving these lifetime values into fun and educational activities since 1910.
  • In a society where your son is taught that winning is everything, Cub Scouting teaches him to “do his best” and to be helpful to others.
  • Scouting teaches family values and works to strengthen your relationship with your son.
  • Scouting activities can bring added value to the time you already have with your son.

But we know that boys do not join Cub Scouting for character building; boys join because it is fun!

Where Are the Cub Scouts?

Cub Scout Packs are everywhere! You just need to know how to find them. The Longhorn Council, Boys Scouts of America covers 23 counties in North Texas. Within this 23 county area are corporations, civic clubs, and churches that charter Cub Scout Packs. These charter partners are a part of a district area in the Longhorn Council. The council has service representatives for each district. That representative can help you find an existing pack near you or help you form your own Cub Scout Pack along with other interested home school parents.

Jason Buescher is the District Director of the Longhorn Council for the Boy Scouts of America. His district includes Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Roanoke, and the HEB area. You may contact him at bsalakeview@aol.com or by calling him at 817-231-8533.

Winners are invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Minnesota’s Mall of America each summer. Winning designs will be featured on the official State-Fish Art website. One piece of artwork in each grade category will be selected as the national best of show winner, and one entry will be chosen as the annual art of conservation stamp award and be featured on Wildlife Forever’s conservation stamp for the coming year. Entries must be postmarked by March 31 each year and must comply with all rules and regulations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.

How to Enter: Students must create an illustration of the Texas state fish or one of the other state fishes and write a composition on its behavior, habitat and conservation. Texas students are encouraged, but not required, to depict the Texas state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Texas entries are judged only against other Texas entries no matter what fish is depicted.

About the Contest: The State-Fish Art Contest is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas’ aquatic resources. We also offer you the choice to use our free lesson plan.

19. PERFORMANCES AT CATS THEATER IN ARLINGTON

DECEMBER 7-16 --- Frontier Santa
Frontier Santa is the story of a group of orphans living in an alley in the rough and tumble town of Fort Worth in 1879. Christmas - and a Blue Norther - is approaching and things look bleak. But rather than fuss and moan, the kids decide to do their best to make their own holiday celebration a success. They scatter throughout the town to gather decorations, food and presents for their own party in the alley - but tell Johnny that he’s too little to help. Too little?! Johnny sets his sights on finding Santa Claus to be their guest of honor, recruiting some of Fort Worth’s most colorful characters to help him. What they find is sure to fire up the spirit of the season. Book by Frances Seidensticker, music and lyrics by Fort Worth’s Linda M. Lee.

JANUARY 25 - FEBRUARY 3 --- Holes (Auditions November 26-28)
Stanley is just a regular kid until he is found responsible for a crime he didn’t commit. We learn about a curse that has been in his family for several generations. His bad luck lands Stanley in a very strange correctional camp in the Texas desert. The warden has all the inmates digging holes in a dry lake bed. The story weaves fascinating tall tales from local history and Stanley’s family. The relationships among the juveniles in the camp develop self worth in this moving story of teen self discovery. Stanley finds a good friend, treasure, and a story worth telling.

FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 2 --- Follow That Rabbit (Auditions January 14-16)
From the moment Alice falls down a rabbit hole into the zany world of Wonderland, the fun never stops. You’ll meet talking birds and animals, singing flowers, hilariously comic kings and queens . . . and find yourself attending a race where the contestants run in circles getting nowhere and everybody wins! There’s a frantic tea party ruled over by the Mad Hatter; and a funny scene where Alice must deal with a pepper-sneezing Duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing tarts; and she is suddenly the accused. Here’s a modern view of a classic where nonsense makes good sense. And Alice even finds a new friend: the watch-carrying White Rabbit.

MARCH 28 - APRIL 6 --- Pied Piper of Hamlin (Auditions February 11-12)
The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it’s flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain...which, once the rats are gone, the Mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.

MAY 2 - 11 --- Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Open Auditions March 10-12)
2008 Fundraiser Show
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. You will be transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father - a silly inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the “tale as old as time” begins.

27. DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITS

THROUGH NOVEMBER 18 --- Away from It All: American Travels from the Collection of Works on Paper

Details: America is a land of mobility, from the covered wagon to the station wagon to the minivan and SUV. Just like the rest of the population, American artists have taken frequent opportunities to travel, getting out of the studio and into the wider world. Drawn from the Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent collection of works on paper, this installation showcases a variety of American scenery-both urban and rural-from the late 19th through the mid-20th century. Many of these works are executed in watercolor, a delicate method of painting that requires dexterity and quick responses, thus it is ideally suited to making art on the open road.

THROUGH NOVEMBER 18 --- Lone Star Legacy: The Barrett Collection of Early Texas Art
Mary Noel and Bill Lamont Gallery

Details: This exhibition showcases the collection of Dallasites Nona and Richard Barrett, which has transformed the Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent holdings into one of the finest assemblages of early Texas art in existence. Starting in the late 1980s, the Barretts began to build what would become a pioneering collection of contemporary Texas art, carefully selecting fine examples by iconic and lesser-known artists, with an eye toward complementing what the DMA already had in its collections.

56. REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR HOME SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR

FEBRUARY 2, 2008 --- Home School Science Fair
Location: Collin College on Spring Creek Parkway

DEADLINE - DECEMBER 17

The North Texas District Science Fair for homeschoolers early registration
is $15 until December 17, 2006 when it increases $5.

Who Can Participate: This fair is recommended for homeschoolers 3rd - 12th grade living in Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. When 7th grade and above students from other counties participate in our fair, they can not advance to the Dallas or any other regional fair.

For More Information or Other Details: Please email Michael Lastufka at lastufka@hesp.org

Details: Teachers, please encourage your students to check out our website at www.hesp.org for information and ideas for science fair projects. Participating in a fair provides invaluable benefit to students even if they never go into any science field. Having to stand up in front of others and tell about a project succinctly will help a student in any field they may choose later on in life.

At least two 7th/8th graders and two 9th through 12th graders will advance to the Dallas Regional competition in March 2007. We are seeking sponsors for cash prizes to go with the trophies. If you know of anyone or any business that may want to help us, please let me know.

If you are a homeschool group, we’d like to know how many children are in your group (and which group it is) since that affects how many students we can send on to the Dallas Regional event.

More: Getting Started
For 7th grade or above: Write your research plan before experimenting. Also, if you are planning to use biological or hazardous materials, you may need to fill out some ISEF forms and submit them to the DRSEF Scientific Review Committee before experimentation begins (see http://www.sciserv.org/isef/students/wizard/index.asp). If you have questions, contact me. Don’t let missing forms keep your student from advancing to the bigger science fairs. The secret is to start the paper work early!

To help you plan, here are the divisions:
Explorer: Grades 3 and 4. We expect some research with simple experiment, poster, simple oral presentation and ability to answer one question well.
Experimentalist: Grades 5 and 6. We expect research with experiment, poster, simple oral presentation and ability to answer two questions well.
Junior: Grades 7 and 8. We expect research with original experiment, poster, paper, reasonable oral presentation, show knowledge of subject answering judges’ questions and having filled out the ISEF Forms.
Senior: Grades 9 to 12. We expect research with original experiment, poster, paper, detailed oral presentation, exhibit familiarity with subject answering judges’ questions and having filled out the ISEF Forms.
