Born in Houston, he grew up in nearby Bayview, on the banks of Galveston Bay - a few miles from the site which became NASA’s Johnson Space Center. As a teenager in the 1950s, the dark skies over Galveston Bay, and the inspiration of an 81-year-old stargazer, Margaret Willits, sparked his early interest in astronomy. His love for the stars was rekindled in the mid-1980s in anticipation of the return of Halley’s Comet. He is the author of the “Stargazer” column published in the Waco Tribune-Herald and other Teas newspapers. Originated in January 1990, “Stargazer” appears every other week. He is the author of (A Beginner’s Guide to) Learning the Night Sky (2003) and Stargazer’s Life List (2004).

FEATURED ARTICLE

Ten Terrific Tips for a High SAT Score (part 2 of 2)
By Jean Burk

This is the second part of a two-part series. You can find Part 1 of the article in the November 2007 issue of our newsletter, or by Clicking Here. If you would like to subscribe to our newsletter write us at info@heartoftex.org

6.) Read a lot of good classic books.
Reading a lot of classic books over the years will help in several ways. They are usually filled with great vocabulary words that may be found on the SAT tests. Also, storing up knowledge about these books can come in handy when writing the SAT essay; The College Board seems to like it when you recall famous works. And of course, having a storehouse of great literary works won’t hurt when you interview for college.

7.) Work some logic curriculum.
The SAT is not a test about knowledge; rather, it is a reasoning and logic test. This is why the same test can be administered all over the nation to students with different curriculum backgrounds. By being aware of this, students can prepare early by taking some logic classes that can help them with their critical thinking and reasoning skills.

8.) Practice at home as if you were taking the actual SAT test.
Creating a testing environment at home that mimics the real test environment can help with success on the SAT. Students should take practice tests around 9:00 in the morning with only a five minute break between sections. Pace yourself by keeping a watch or timer nearby and be sure to have several sharpened pencils ready. Use the same calculator you will use on the real test. Since the real test is over three hours long, practicing like this can help your endurance.

9.) Take the required math before your senior year.
Make sure you are up to date on the required math of the SAT. If at all possible, take Algebra 1 and Geometry before eleventh grade. This will cover the math on the PSAT/NMSQT which only counts in your junior year. The new SAT has some Algebra 2 which should be taken as soon as possible.

10.) On test day, be prepared, rested and confident. Remember, your SAT score is not the sole representation of your abilities.
If you have done your “homework,” taking the SAT should not feel like the end of the world. Make sure you rest the day before the test, go to be early, and have all your supplies ready before you wake. Arrive early, take some deep breaths and start in.

If you have prepared for the SAT before your senior year, taking the test should be old hat to you. Remember, everyone else there is taking the same test, so relax.. The main difference in scores between you and them can be determined by your preparedness beforehand.

Jean Burk is a published author, speaker and teacher. She has been featured on television as an expert on the SAT and PSAT tests, College Prep and How to Get Free College. Jean is also a “completed” home school mom. Both of her children received incredible scholarships because of their PSAT and SAT scores. She has been teaching her “Master the SAT” Prep Class in the D/FW area and many surrounding cities. She also travels and speaks about her book College Prep Genius. How to Start Up or Get Involved in a Cub Scout (or Boy Scout) Program
By Jason Buescher

While this article includes information related to the Cub Scout program, these same steps would be applicable if your child is interested in pursuing Boy Scouts.

Contact An Area Representative for a Program Near You.
There are several ways to get in touch with an area representative. Just use the way that is most convenient for you! Please have the name of your city and closest major intersection ready to give us. Let us know if you are interested in forming a group with other home school families or if you want to join an existing Cub Scout Program.

  • Call our office and speak to our representative: 817-231-8502

Why Join Cub Scouts?
  • Your time is valuable. Today’s families, more than ever, struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting helps to support your family by providing ready-made opportunities for you and your son to do things together.

  • Your son needs to belong to a group of boys his own age. Through this sense of belonging, he builds his self-esteem and learns to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups your boy joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, and physical fitness. Boy Scouts of America has been weaving these lifetime values into fun and educational activities since 1910.

  • In a society where your son is taught that winning is everything, Cub Scouting teaches him to “do his best” and to be helpful to others.

  • Scouting teaches family values and works to strengthen your relationship with your son.

  • Scouting activities can bring added value to the time you already have with your son.

But we know that boys do not join Cub Scouting for character building; boys join because it is fun!

Where Are the Cub Scouts?

Cub Scout Packs are everywhere! You just need to know how to find them. The Longhorn Council, Boys Scouts of America covers 23 counties in North Texas. Within this 23 county area are corporations, civic clubs, and churches that charter Cub Scout Packs. These charter partners are a part of a district area in the Longhorn Council. The council has service representatives for each district. That representative can help you find an existing pack near you or help you form your own Cub Scout Pack along with other interested home school parents.

Jason Buescher is the District Director of the Longhorn Council for the Boy Scouts of America. His district includes Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Roanoke, and the HEB area. You may contact him at bsalakeview@aol.com or by calling him at 817-231-8533.

3. TEXAS STATE FISH-ART CONTEST

ENTRIES DUE MARCH 31, 2008

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is the official host for the Texas State-Fish Art Contest sponsored by Wildlife Forever. All Texas entries in the annual contest are to be sent to TFFC for judging. Winning Texas entries will be forwarded to Wildlife Forever to compete for national best of show and art of conservation stamp honors.

Who Can Participate: All Texas students in grades 4 through 12.

Categories: State-Fish Art Contest entries are judged in three categories: grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. One Texas winner from each category is selected each year.

Winners are invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Minnesota's Mall of America each summer. Winning designs will be featured on the official State-Fish Art website. One piece of artwork in each grade category will be selected as the national best of show winner, and one entry will be chosen as the annual art of conservation stamp award and be featured on Wildlife Forever's conservation stamp for the coming year. Entries must be postmarked by March 31 each year and must comply with all rules and regulations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.

How to Enter: Students must create an illustration of the Texas state fish or one of the other state fishes and write a composition on its behavior, habitat and conservation. Texas students are encouraged, but not required, to depict the Texas state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Texas entries are judged only against other Texas entries no matter what fish is depicted.

About the Contest: The State-Fish Art Contest is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas' aquatic resources. We also offer you the choice to use our free lesson plan.

5. THEO IN PLANO OFFERING CLASSES FOR 2007-2008

From their NEW SPACE at 15th and Custer!!

Plano’s THEO - The Outsourcing Solution for Home Schoolers---was born to fill in the gaps of what is available to North Texas home educated students. We strive to offer classes which require a large pool of students to “make.”

We chose a centrally placed location, one mile north of George Bush Tollway and two miles west of 75, to provide classes for the home educated junior high and high school student who wants something different.

Bursting at the seams with newly added shop and drafting, sign language, chorus, theater and speech and even a writing club for those students (or adults) who love to write and long to be published, THEO has a heart to help families homeschool through high school, without missing out on the highly academic classes or extracurricular classes offered by public and private schools.

After all, you can hardly have a writing club for excellent writers if you are pulling only from a few hundred families....but you can if you are pulling the best writers from all over the metroplex....same goes for chorus and band a/k/a Instrumental Ensemble....

Academic Tutoring Available:
THEO also offers academic tutoring in a classroom setting for math, science, Spanish, writing, Worldview and more. THEO caters to 6-12th grade, but Paula Smith offers science for all grades from our same great location through The Science Resource. www.thescienceresource.com

This makes the Herdmans infiltrate the only safe haven in all of town. The next Sunday during Sunday school, Imogene Herdman heard about a pageant, and became interested in this "Christmas Pageant" and decided to sign all the Herdmans up for all the main, important parts. This could only mean one thing; TROUBLE! In the end, the Herdmans find out the true meaning of love.

19. PERFORMANCES AT CATS THEATER IN ARLINGTON

NOVEMBER 2-11 --- Charlotte's Web (Auditions Oct 1-3)
An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of piggy persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.

DECEMBER 7-16 --- Frontier Santa
Frontier Santa is the story of a group of orphans living in an alley in the rough and tumble town of Fort Worth in 1879. Christmas - and a Blue Norther - is approaching and things look bleak. But rather than fuss and moan, the kids decide to do their best to make their own holiday celebration a success. They scatter throughout the town to gather decorations, food and presents for their own party in the alley - but tell Johnny that he's too little to help. Too little?! Johnny sets his sights on finding Santa Claus to be their guest of honor, recruiting some of Fort Worth's most colorful characters to help him. What they find is sure to fire up the spirit of the season. Book by Frances Seidensticker, music and lyrics by Fort Worth's Linda M. Lee.

JANUARY 25 - FEBRUARY 3 --- Holes (Auditions November 26-28)
Stanley is just a regular kid until he is found responsible for a crime he didn't commit. We learn about a curse that has been in his family for several generations. His bad luck lands Stanley in a very strange correctional camp in the Texas desert. The warden has all the inmates digging holes in a dry lake bed. The story weaves fascinating tall tales from local history and Stanley's family. The relationships among the juveniles in the camp develop self worth in this moving story of teen self discovery. Stanley finds a good friend, treasure, and a story worth telling.

FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 2 --- Follow That Rabbit (Auditions January 14-16)
From the moment Alice falls down a rabbit hole into the zany world of Wonderland, the fun never stops. You'll meet talking birds and animals, singing flowers, hilariously comic kings and queens . . . and find yourself attending a race where the contestants run in circles getting nowhere and everybody wins! There's a frantic tea party ruled over by the Mad Hatter; and a funny scene where Alice must deal with a pepper-sneezing Duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing tarts; and she is suddenly the accused. Here's a modern view of a classic where nonsense makes good sense. And Alice even finds a new friend: the watch-carrying White Rabbit.

MARCH 28 - APRIL 6 --- Pied Piper of Hamlin (Auditions February 11-12)
The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it's flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain...which, once the rats are gone, the Mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.

MAY 2 - 11 --- Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Open Auditions March 10-12)
2008 Fundraiser Show
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. You will be transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father - a silly inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the “tale as old as time” begins.

26. DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITS

THROUGH NOVEMBER 18 --- Away from It All: American Travels from the Collection of Works on Paper

Details: America is a land of mobility, from the covered wagon to the station wagon to the minivan and SUV. Just like the rest of the population, American artists have taken frequent opportunities to travel, getting out of the studio and into the wider world. Drawn from the Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent collection of works on paper, this installation showcases a variety of American scenery - both urban and rural - from the late 19th through the mid-20th century. Many of these works are executed in watercolor, a delicate method of painting that requires dexterity and quick responses, thus it is ideally suited to making art on the open road.

THROUGH NOVEMBER 18 --- Lone Star Legacy: The Barrett Collection of Early Texas Art
Mary Noel and Bill Lamont Gallery

Details: This exhibition showcases the collection of Dallasites Nona and Richard Barrett, which has transformed the Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent holdings into one of the finest assemblages of early Texas art in existence. Starting in the late 1980s, the Barretts began to build what would become a pioneering collection of contemporary Texas art, carefully selecting fine examples by iconic and lesser-known artists, with an eye toward complementing what the DMA already had in its collections.

4H provides youth an opportunity to pursue their own interests - from photography to computer science, from entrepreneurship to entomology. There are a wide range of activities to choose from. You don’t have to raise livestock to be a member of 4-H!

4H Clubs also allow young people to serve as officers and learn to conduct meetings, handle club funds, and facilitate group decision-making. In a growing number of communities, 4-H youth serve as youth representatives in municipal or county government or as members of Teen Courts. They give back to their communities. 4-H members get involved in volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor younger children and help people who are less fortunate.

A list of 4-H projects is available online: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/index.html

His love for the stars was rekindled in the mid-1980s in anticipation of the return of Halley’s Comet. He is the author of the “Stargazer” column published in the Waco Tribune-Herald and other Teas newspapers. Originated in January 1990, “Stargazer” appears every other week.
