Looking for More Teaching Resources?
By Barbara Rhodes, Media Consultant, Northeast Texas Library System

The Northeast Texas Library System (NETLS) Media Collection has hundreds of educational videos and DVDs for preschool and school age children. Your public library can serve as a gateway to them. All you need is a library card!

“One homeschooling mom found some videos on Ancient Egypt. Her 7-year-old had become fascinated by the topic and had exhausted everything we owned. She was pleased to see some “new” titles. Another group found some videos on good manners that they found helpful.”
Margie Sanchez, Abilene Public Library

The NETLS Media Collection consists of approximately 4200 educational VHS videos and DVDs, and over 600 die blocks. The collection, which has served public libraries and their patrons for over 20 years, was developed to provide a source of educational media which might otherwise be too expensive or specialized for a single library to purchase.

“The NETLS Media Collection has been extremely useful for the homeschoolers of our community. One family uses the collection to supplement Science lessons while another supplemented their son's English curriculum.”
Barbara Moore, Driscoll Public Library

The NETLS Media Collection can provide a wide range of educational DVDs and videos to complement and expand home school curriculums. Parents with visual learners in the family will find media especially useful. Materials cover age ranges from pre-kindergarten through adult. The collection’s online catalog, WebBOOK©, located at http://www.av.netls.org is available for anyone to visit and search, 7 days a week, 23 hours a day. The catalog can be searched by title, subject or keyword. Some of the subjects you will find are:

· Geography
· Science
· Math
· History
· Ethics/Personal Values
· Holidays
· Multicultural Information
· Programs based on the best in children’s literature
· Health/Safety/Citizenship
· Driver’s Education

After you have searched the catalog and chosen some likely titles, take a list of your selections to your public library where a member of the library staff can go online and book the materials for you. The items will be sent to the library where they can be picked up. The general booking and delivery period is two weeks and the amount of time you may keep the items at home will depend on the loaning procedures at your local library.

Go online to http://www.av.netls.org and visit the NETLS Media Collection catalog today. Our materials can enhance the home school experience for students and teachers alike.

Free College Can Happen to YOU!
By Jean Burk

Full Scholarship -two words that could change your life. Getting free college can be like winning the lottery. Imagine throwing away several trash bags full of college scholarships that come in the mail. This is what happened to us. But for some families, getting just one scholarship offer could be the difference in junior college or the university of their choice.

As a homeshooling family, you’ve already dedicated your time, money and energy for your family, so don’t stop there! Even if you haven’t had a lot of extra money to save for college, scholarships can still come your way. Just because you’ve homeschooled, doesn’t mean that you have to be out of the loop when it comes to finding the scholarship
opportunities.

Here are five successful secrets to scholarships and free college that even many public and private schools students are not aware of:

  1. Realize that full scholarships can be obtained by students who receive certain scores on their PSAT/NMSQT or SAT tests. You can have colleges begging you to enroll and who will gladly pay your way. There are usually several full-rides available in each department of most colleges and they love to give them to kids with good test scores.

  1. Understand that the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT tests are tests of logic. They are not about exclusive knowledge or curriculum only learned at public or private schools. Many smart kids (from all academic backgrounds) do poorly on these tests because they don’t understand the test or how to look at the questions logically.

  1. Discover that succeeding on these tests can be just a matter of learning the test-taking techniques and recurring patterns found on these standardized tests. The questions very often point you to the answers and students can learn to answer them quickly once they discover the secret methods that many others successful test-takers have.

  1. Create a successful game plan. After learning the secret strategies of decoding these tests, incorporate this information into your homeschooling. Spend twenty minutes a day or an hour or two a week practicing these techniques on actual tests from the College Board. This will also keep students from cramming at test time.

  1. Prepare your freshman and sophomores to take the PSAT/NMSQT for practice in October and definitely take it in their junior year. This is when it counts for all the big scholarship money. Students should take the real SAT test when their practice scores are above 1500 (the national average) or if they are a senior. The SAT is offered seven times a year and there is no penalty for taking it many times. Colleges usually drop the lowest scores (they don’t average them) and some schools will even take the highest score from each section from different tests.

The home education decision is a life-changing experience and when homeschoolers get the high scores and the incredible scholarships, it speaks for itself. For us, the sacrifice was more than worth it. Besides, we got free college and so can you.

3. THEO IN PLANO OFFERING CLASSES FOR 2007-2008

From their NEW SPACE at 15th and Custer!!

Plano’s THEO—The Outsourcing Solution for Home Schoolers---was born to fill in the gaps of what is available to North Texas home educated students. We strive to offer classes which require a large pool of students to “make.”

We chose a centrally placed location, one mile north of George Bush Tollway and two miles west of 75, to provide classes for the home educated junior high and high school student who wants something different.

Bursting at the seams with newly added shop and drafting, sign language, chorus, theater and speech and even a writing club for those students (or adults) who love to write and long to be published, THEO has a heart to help families homeschool through high school, without missing out on the highly academic classes or extracurricular classes offered by public and private schools.

After all, you can hardly have a writing club for excellent writers if you are pulling only from a few hundred families….but you can if you are pulling the best writers from all over the metroplex….same goes for chorus and band a/k/a Instrumental Ensemble….

Academic Tutoring Available:
THEO also offers academic tutoring in a classroom setting for math, science, Spanish, writing, Worldview and more. THEO caters to 6-12th grade, but Paula Smith offers science for all grades from our same great location through The Science Resource. www.thescienceresource.com

16. PERFORMANCES AT CATS THEATER IN ARLINGTON

SEPTEMBER 28 – OCTOBER 7 --- Honk, Jr.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling", “Honk!” tells the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother. Soon after Ugly is born, he is wisked away by a wily Cat who wants to eat Ugly for dinner. Eventually, Ugly manages to escape but has no idea how to return home. Along his way, he encounters a beautiful swan, Penny, tangled in a fishing line. After saving her, the two birds fall in love. However, she must return to her flock and fly south for the winter. Eventually, Ugly’s mother finds him frozen in snow. Luckily, her warm tears manage to thaw him out and he comes back to life – as a handsome swan! Soon, Ugly is reunited with Penny and two swans decide to live the rest of their days in the same pond as Ugly’s loyal mother.

NOVEMBER 2-11 --- Charlotte's Web (Auditions Oct 1-3)
An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of piggy persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.

DECEMBER 7-16 --- Frontier Santa (Auditions October 22-24)
Frontier Santa is the story of a group of orphans living in an alley in the rough and tumble town of Fort Worth in 1879. Christmas - and a Blue Norther - is approaching and things look bleak. But rather than fuss and moan, the kids decide to do their best to make their own holiday celebration a success. They scatter throughout the town to gather decorations, food and presents for their own party in the alley - but tell Johnny that he's too little to help. Too little?! Johnny sets his sights on finding Santa Claus to be their guest of honor, recruiting some of Fort Worth's most colorful characters to help him. What they find is sure to fire up the spirit of the season. Book by Frances Seidensticker, music and lyrics by Fort Worth's Linda M. Lee.

JANUARY 25 – FEBRUARY 3 --- Holes (Auditions November 26-28)
Stanley is just a regular kid until he is found responsible for a crime he didn't commit. We learn about a curse that has been in his family for several generations. His bad luck lands Stanley in a very strange correctional camp in the Texas desert. The warden has all the inmates digging holes in a dry lake bed. The story weaves fascinating tall tales from local history and Stanley's family. The relationships among the juveniles in the camp develop self worth in this moving story of teen self discovery. Stanley finds a good friend, treasure, and a story worth telling.

FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 2 --- Follow That Rabbit (Auditions January 14-16)
From the moment Alice falls down a rabbit hole into the zany world of Wonderland, the fun never stops. You'll meet talking birds and animals, singing flowers, hilariously comic kings and queens . . . and find yourself attending a race where the contestants run in circles getting nowhere and everybody wins! There's a frantic tea party ruled over by the Mad Hatter; and a funny scene where Alice must deal with a pepper-sneezing Duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing tarts; and she is suddenly the accused. Here's a modern view of a classic where nonsense makes good sense. And Alice even finds a new friend: the watch-carrying White Rabbit.

MARCH 28 – APRIL 6 --- Pied Piper of Hamlin (Auditions February 11-12)
The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it's flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain...which, once the rats are gone, the Mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.

MAY 2 – 11 --- Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Open Auditions March 10-12)
2008 Fundraiser Show
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. You will be transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father – a silly inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the “tale as old as time” begins.

Important Message from the Museum:

In September, the Museum of Science and History will move forward with plans to construct a new, world-class Museum campus to replace our aging Museum building. On September 4, we’ll move out of our existing facility as we start our two-year construction phase. In October, the building – with the exception of the Omni Theater – will be removed to make space for the new facility, to be built on the same location.

Over the next two years, you can still experience our exhibits in our temporary home right next door at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Our ExploraZone exhibit “Seeing” is already there, the first of a series of exhibits that uphold our long-standing focus on hands-on interactivity.

In November you’ll find exhibits both new and familiar, including our immensely popular KIDSPACE® and a new Design Lab – part laboratory, part art studio and part classroom – where students of all ages will be able to learn by questioning and exploring.

Our temporary home in the National Cowgirl Museum also means that for one ticket price, you’ll experience “two museums under one roof” with free access to National Cowgirl Museum exhibits and collections that celebrate the lives of legendary women who exemplified the pioneer spirit of the American West.

Later this fall, you can visit a Preview Center offering updates on construction of our new campus, and shop in a new Museum Store that will offer items such as fossils, science toys and books.

We’re IMAX-imizing your Theater Experience.
Omni Theater IMAX® film presentations will be suspended starting September 4 for construction that will replace the theater’s sound system with a new state-of-the-art digital sound system and make upgrades to our guest amenities, including new restrooms and concession areas. The upgraded theater is slated to open in late spring 2008 with great, new films like Mummies, Deep Sea and more.

Noble Planetarium Plans
While we’re constructing a new Noble Planetarium, astronomy enthusiasts will continue to have access to a full schedule of astronomy programs. The Museum will continue to host Monthly Star Parties, occasional telescope workshops, and regular meetings of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society at nearby locations, including the National Cowgirl Museum.

Educational Programs
We’re passionate about our commitment to Texas students, who will experience “two museums under one roof” through joint field trips to the National Cowgirl Museum and the Museum of Science and History. We’re also taking our learning initiatives “on the road” directly to the classroom. DesignIT workshops, Discovery Labs on Wheels, Distance Learning teleconferences and Family Science Festivals will take engaging hands-on activities to schools across the region. Our Loan Kit program and Saturday Educator Workshops will also continue. Educators can find our 2007-08 School Field Trip Planner online in late September.

Museum School®
Museum School won’t miss a beat! Year-round preschool programs continue to be offered in the new transitional village west of the National Cowgirl Museum. Weekend classes for school-aged children will resume in late fall.

Membership Benefits
We’re still here – and so are your membership benefits. During construction, you’ll receive extended member benefits, special offers and discounts to area attractions and partners, and other valuable bonuses. Your membership will continue to provide free exhibit admission to the National Cowgirl Museum and, when the Omni Theater reopens next spring, you’ll be first in line to experience the renovated theater during special member events. And don’t forget: your membership is still valid for free admission to more than 250 science centers across the country.

The coming months will bring dramatic change for the Fort Worth Museum and Science and History. We’re committed to keeping you posted about activities and programs throughout the building period. We hope that you share our excitement as we look forward to the new Museum facility and the many rich learning opportunities it will provide our community for decades to come. Stay tuned!

28. BARNES AND NOBLE SUMMER READING PROGRAM

THROUGH SEPTEMBER 4
Barnes and Noble’s reading program lets your kids earn free books!!

Fostering a love of reading and its rewards, the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is popular with both students in the first through sixth grades and educators throughout America.

Last summer, we provided more than 291,000 free books and participants read 2.3 million books! This year, children can join Jack and Annie from Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House on their summer adventure as part of their own journey in our Summer Reading program.

Participation is fun and easy for kids to earn free books! They simply read any eight books — library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble — write about their favorite part, and bring a completed Summer Reading in the Magic Tree House Journal tear page to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children can then choose from a list of paperback books. We’re confident there will be plenty of titles they will like.

No matter where your child spends their summer vacation, reading has the ability to take them far, far away — and it can even earn them a free book!

Information kits are available at your local Barnes & Noble store, or simply print out the documents below.

34. PERFORMANCE AT BASS HALL --- THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

SEPTEMBER 4-9

In the Tony-Award winning new musical comedy THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. SPELLING BEE has been hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “perfect in every possible way – that rarity of rarities, a super-smart musical that is also a bona fide crowd pleaser.” This tuneful, offbeat and at times heartwarming show offers audience members the opportunity (strictly voluntary) to become part of the action as on-stage spellers. The New York Times calls SPELLING BEE, “irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious – gold stars all around.” This show is suitable for most audiences. Parental guidance is suggested.

44. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LITTLE HANDS ON THE FARM --- STATE FAIR OF TEXAS

SEPTEMBER 28 – OCTOBER 21

What is Little Hands on the Farm: Little Hands on the Farm is the Number 1, most talked about attraction at the fair. It is located prominently in the agricultural area within feet of the petting zoo, coliseum and the Cotton Bowl. We are expecting nearly 1,000 family members per hour to move through this featured attraction.

Volunteers Needed: We need 50 volunteers each day, 25 “farmer assistants” in two 5 hour shifts to be an integral part of the educational process. We can combine several small groups if you find it difficult to locate a full 50 within your group. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age (younger ones can come but cannot be counted as a volunteer) and we need 1 “adult” volunteer for every 3 “children” volunteers.

Many of those who volunteered last year signed up their family members. This allowed the entire family to come to the fair (a $100 value for a family of five), provide community service, spend five hours interacting with thousands of people, introduce children to where their food comes from and spend the remainder of the day visiting the rest of the fair.

Shift Hours: The Little Hands program opens at 10:00am and closes at 7:00pm. The first shift would arrive on the grounds at 8:45am and start at 9:00am with orientation. The morning group of volunteers would finish at 2:15pm, the second group arrives at 1:45pm, starts at 2:00pm and finishes at 7:15pm.

Benefits: State Fair of Texas provides each volunteer a Little Hands t-shirt, an admission ticket to the fair and parking passes for each family. We ask everyone to car pool as much as possible as parking in the Blue lot is always crowded.

If your family or group would like to participate: Contact Sondra or Candyce at 817-279-8223 or sondra@owranchtx.com.

46. LONE STAR HISTORY DAY: A SPECIAL DAY FOR HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS

OCTOBER 5
Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In a day just for home schooled students and their families, explore art throughout our historic buildings. How do people make art a part of their life? What kinds of art were admired in the 19th century? How did ordinary people become artists?

We'll be exploring 5 key areas of art: Portraits; Ordinary Objects Made Beautiful; Fine Art; Advertising Art ; and Hobbies

Some questions that we will be asking and answering during this event are:
How do history and art intersect?
How and why have once common artistic skills become specialized skills?
How did people from the past make their homes beautiful?
How is art a part of our everyday lives?

Explore the art within the Village through a specially designed History Hunt. Enjoy demonstrations from our resident blacksmith and potter. Visit with our historic characters, and experiment with some of the crafts they know so well. Try your hand at special activities hosted by Tandy Leather and the Dallas Museum of Art.
