Jag Day includes campus tour, free concert, 2 tickets to basketball game, financial aid workshop
What Makes us "The College That's Different"?
Our Christian Environment - Jacksonville College is proud of our Christian heritage. Our faculty and staff help promote a deepening of our students' faith rather than create an environment hostile to the students' beliefs that you will get at most state schools.
Our Cost - Private colleges usually make you think of high expense. Not at Jacksonville College. Compare other schools' total cost for tuition, fees, books and room and board to Jacksonville's ~$5000 per semester (at current rates) and you will be pleasantly surprised. And add to that the fact that 95% of our students receive financial aid and scholarships to reduce that cost even more.
Our Class Size - Our classes make the move from home schooling to college and easy transition. With the larger universities having core classes with 200-400 students in each, Jacksonville College's classes of 15-25 students give the students a better learning environment and better chance to succeed.

The new Learning Lounge introduces visitors to the crafts of the "No Hand Idle" exhibit. Through hands-on, interactive exhibits, visitors of all ages can try their hand at designing
a quilt's color scheme or working with tools. Explore the changing fashions in quilt fabrics, study Victorian flower painting and learn to distinguish familiar and exotic woods.
Be sure to meet at 1:30 p.m. on the porch of Millermore for daily tours of both Millermore and Sullivan House. You’ll see and learn about 25 quilts from Dallas Heritage Village’s own collection.

Who Needs Truancy Laws? We Have Daytime Curfews!
--by Tim Lambert, Texas Home School Coalition
This article comes from Mr. Lambert's blog: Right in Texas and is reprinted with permission.
More and more Texas cities are jumping on the bandwagon of daytime curfews. In 1995, the Texas legislature enacted a law to allow cities and counties to adopt daytime curfews under the reasoning that students not in school were driving up crime rates. Homeschoolers have generally opposed these ordinances because home school students sometimes get caught up by over zealous police officers. (Read how daytime curfews impact home schoolers.)
We are now seeing school districts asking cities to adopt daytime curfews to help them enforce the compulsory attendance laws. HEB school district asked Hurst, Euless and Bedford to adopt such a curfew last fall, and Beford and Euless dutifully complied. In fact, Bedford did not even have a public hearing on the issue. Bedford, by the way, will have a hearing on a proposal to rescind the curfew next Tuesday, January 27, at 7PM at City Hall. Today the Star Telegram said the school district reported a decline in crimes from 22,805 last year at this time to 13,800 this year. Yet in December the police reported only one citation had been given. Those numbers smell to me, and I don't mean in a nice way. The city council in Bedford is in full defense mode, trying to justify the ordinance as home schoolers push for it to be rescinded. The district is obviously trying to do its part to protect the ordinance. Home schoolers in Bedford should call their city councilmen to ask for the recinsion of the measure and attend the meeting to make their voices heard.
Dallas has also joined the cry for a daytime curfew but wants one with a dentention center and fines for parents of up to $500. In Waco last year a similar measure was defeated by a coalition of home school parents, minority citizens and the ACLU. Public opposition to the measure continued to build as these groups talked about the impact on home schoolers and minorities. The Houston Chronicle ran a story about the selective enforcment of its daytime curfew against minorities in 2007. The final straw in Waco was when opponents pointed out that the legislature enacted a law in 2007 to allow police to enforce the compulsory attendance statute by taking a truant back to his school and so there was really no reason to have such a curfew. (Read that story.)
History has shown that these measures are a danger to the freedom of law-abiding citizens and can be defeated when the public is informed and people take action. Home schoolers would do well to watch for these efforts from their cities and counties and be ready to respond.

Southlake Considering Imposing Teen Nighttime Curfew (2/12/2008)
Dallas says it will hold a public hearing on March 25.
A second hearing and final vote would be scheduled for April 22.
This is a chance to make your voices heard.

Texas Leads the Way in Growth of Home Schooling
According to a recently released report by the U. S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, the number of home schooled students reached 1.5 million in 2007. This represents a 74% increase since its first report in 1999 and a 36% increase since its 2003 estimate. The percentage of the school-age population being homeschooled increased from 2.2% in 2003 to 2.9% in 2007, according to the Department of Education.
However, Dr. Brian Ray, President of the National Home Education Research Institute, believes these estimates are low because home schooling parents are significantly less likely to answer government-sponsored surveys, and his organization estimates over 2 million home school students in 2008.
Tim Lambert, President of the Texas Home School Coalition, says that Texas leads the country in the number of home schooled children, with an estimate of well over 300,000 children and close to 120,000 families. "Since the Texas courts clarified that home schooling was legal in 1987, we have seen a robust growth of about 6-8% per year," he said.
Some of the top home schooling reasons in a 2007 Parent and Family Involvement in Education Survey include: concerns about the school environment (including safety, drugs, peer pressure): 88%; a desire to provide religious or moral instruction: 83%; a dissatisfaction with instruction at other schools: 73%; an interest in a non-traditional approach: 65%. The percentage that fell into the category for "other reasons" was 32%, indicating that there are a good many reasons that families choose to teach their children at home. The survey allowed families to choose more than one reason, and it is very likely that most families took advantage of that option. Mr. Lambert said, "Many Texas home school families would acknowledge many of these same reasons in their decision to teach their children at home."

The Day the Chicken Brought the Truant Officer to the Door
--by Christine Westfall
I knew we were in for a new and different experience when my youngest daughter was given a few chickens to raise. Learning to wake up to the unique alarm that only a rooster can provide was an experience all its own. But even that experience didn't compare to the day the chicken brought the truant officer to my door.
It all started when my daughter asked if she could show her rooster in our county livestock show. Before she could enter the rooster into the show, we found out that we first had to have him tested and certified.
"Call this number and schedule an appointment," our 4-H leader told us. "The Chicken Man will come to your house and test the chicken."
Okay. That didn't sound too difficult . . . right?
The call was made, the day arrived, and right on time the Chicken Man pulled into our driveway.
Now, here is where things got a little tricky. I really try to avoid the chicken, if at all possible, because I am just not into handling live animals. So, I called my youngest daughter outside so she could take the Chicken Man to the coop.
As we ventured toward the backyard the Chicken Man started up a conversation with my daughter, "So, you're homeschooled huh?"
"Yes," she answered.
"Well, I guess it's only fair to tell you that I am also a part-time truant officer," he said, looking over his shoulder at me.
Surprised, and a tad bit stunned, I replied, "Oh! That's nice. And how is that working out for you?" Perhaps now is a good time to mention that sarcasm runs deep in our family communication style.
"It's alright," he replied. "Just earlier today I had one in tears when I found him at home and his momma thought he was at school."
We were distracted back to the task at hand as my daughter struggled to hold the rooster tightly while the Chicken Man/Truant Officer poked his wing a few times.
As we walked with him back to his truck, he returned to his original line of questioning. "How many hours a day to you teach them?" he asked.
"Depends on the season," I replied.
This is where I found myself having to make a decision. I could take this conversation one of two ways:
(A) I could stand on my rights that what I am doing is legal and not offer any further information to this man.
Or (B) I could use this opportunity, knowing I am within my rights, to educate this person and offer him a chance to see that homeschooling works in our family . . . and perhaps leave my home with a better feel for homeschoolers in general.
I like a challenge, so I chose option B.
"You see, it's like this," I explained. "We school year-round, based on the seasons. During the winter and summer months we school full days because it's too hot or cold to get out. During the spring and fall months we back off on how much we school in order to do other activities such as soccer, 4-H, church, or other social and learning opportunities or just to get outside and enjoy the world around us. It's what works for us."
"I see," he said, handing my daughter a form to fill out.
I began to pray under my breath. Dear God PLEASE let her remember her address. Oh! And please let her hand-writing be legible.
I had not realized that calling the Chicken Man would result in a pop quiz for my daughter. If I had, I would have helped her study for it. Thank goodness he came out when he did, and not a week or two prior, as we had taken a four-week break for a family vacation. Who knows what all the children might have forgotten over the holiday!
The Chicken Man asked a couple of questions about curriculum, and I returned his queries by explaining how great our kids learn because they are given more personalized attention then their public school counterparts.
We must have passed his test because he didn't have any more questions. He handed us the bird's certification
papers and went on his way.
The rooster aced his test, too.

Categories: State-Fish Art Contest entries are judged in three categories: grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. One Texas winner from each category is selected each year.
Winners are invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Minnesota's Mall of America each summer. Winning designs will be featured on the official State-Fish Art website. One piece of artwork in each grade category will be selected as the national best of show winner, and one entry will be chosen as the annual art of conservation stamp award and be featured on Wildlife Forever's conservation stamp for the coming year. Entries must be postmarked by March 31 each year and must comply with all rules and regulations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.
How to Enter: Students must create an illustration of the Texas state fish or one of the other state fishes and write a composition on its behavior, habitat and conservation. Texas students are encouraged, but not required, to depict the Texas state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Texas entries are judged only against other Texas entries no matter what fish is depicted.
About the Contest: The State-Fish Art Contest is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas' aquatic resources. We also offer you the choice to use our free lesson plan.

11. CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS TEEN COURT
Teen Court benefits both youth and community by providing an alternative method of adjudicating juvenile offenders and allowing teen volunteers to learn about the judicial system, while documenting Community Service hours.
Who Can Volunteer: Full time students ages 13-18 who are in PUBLIC, PRIVATE OR HOME SCHOOLS.
Volunteers may serve as jurors for our Teen Court sessions, or once trained, can act as a defense attorney or prosecutor in our Teen Court trials.
Teen Defendants are held responsible for their behavior while giving them the opportunity to participate in and become knowledgeable about the judicial system. Juvenile Offenders "pay" for their offense(s) by performing community service and participating in Teen Court. Volunteer teen attorneys present offender's cases to a jury of their peers.
Upon successful completion of the program, offender's cases are dismissed and do not appear on their permanent records. Teen Court alleviates the strain on the regular court system, besides giving juvenile offenders a second chance. The program also provides youths in the area a chance to participate in the judicial process.
Location: North Richland Hills Teen Court

12. TEXAS HOME SCHOOL COALITION GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD PROGRAM
Do you ever scratch your head when thinking about how to fulfill the requirement of a "study of good citizenship"? THSC offers a Good Citizenship Program, which rewards students for their participation in the political process and helps them fulfill that requirement.
Certificates are printed, upon request, for students who have volunteered at least forty hours in Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process, in any combination.
Each year the program culminates with rewards presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet. The volunteer hours may be tracked on a form that can be downloaded and printed as often as needed. Students will be granted eight hours for each Capitol Day attended.
Please note that, while certificates will be issued upon request at any time, the awards will be given based on hours worked between April 1, 2008, and April 1, 2009. The forms must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 1 if students are to be considered for awards.
What is a course in good citizenship: For a detailed description, please visit: http://www.thsc.org/good_citizen/good_citizenship_program.asp
The Good Citizenship Certificates and Awards
THSC has instituted an ongoing program to recognize home school students who participate in good citizenship activities with its Good Citizenship Certificate. This certificate will be awarded to each student who participates with at least forty (40) hours of volunteer work in any combination from the following areas: Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process.
Home school students may be awarded THSC Good Citizenship Certificates at any time following the completion of 40 hours of good citizenship work.
Any home schooled student who earns a Good Citizenship Certificate is automatically entered into the competition for THSC’s Good Citizenship Awards. The following awards recognize the Texas students with the most volunteer hours (highest number of voters registered for the Alamo Award) in each category and are presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.
Alamo Award
New voters can be registered most easily when an adult becomes a deputy voter registrar. The parent or support group member can then work with home school students as a deputy voter registrar to take voter registration cards to people who fill them in and give them to the deputy voter registrar. These completed cards will then be delivered by the deputy voter registrar to the voter registrar of the county. Home school students can use meetings of support groups, church meetings, and other gathering to register new voters. Deputy voter registrars will be responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate. In addition, THSC will award the Alamo Good Citizenship Award to the student who registers the most new voters in Texas for each year.
Ranger Award
Credit for the certificate may also be earned by volunteer work in the campaign of candidates for public office. Any local, state, or federal campaign qualifies for this effort. Campaign officials are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate. In addition, THSC will award the Ranger Good Citizenship Award to the student with the most hours of volunteer work in political campaigns.
Lone Star Award
Home school students may earn credit for good citizenship in the political party process by volunteering to help at precinct, county/senatorial, or state conventions or other political party functions of their chosen political party. Political party officers are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate. In addition, THSC will award the Lone Star Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours in the category of the political party process in Texas.
Republic Award
Finally, credit for this certificate may also be earned by students who are involved in the legislative process at any local, state, or federal level. Time spent in working for or against any particular issue qualifies. Parents or leaders of any group working on such issues are responsible for documenting the number of hours completed by home school students in this area for credit toward the THSC Good Citizenship Certificate. In addition, THSC will award the Republic Good Citizenship Award to the home school student with the most hours each year in the category of the legislative process.
The THSC Good Citizenship Certificates will be mailed to students upon receipt of verification from the officials documenting the hours. The Alamo, Ranger, Lone Star & Republic Awards will be given to winners at the THSC Awards Banquet held each year.

14. ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION
The 2008 competition is over, but will be held again in Spring 2009.
"An Artistic Discovery" is the annual nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Each Congressional District may host its own competition, and since the competition was first launched in 1982, hundreds of thousands of students have participated in over 5000 locally conducted contests.
This spring, several North Texas Congressional offices will hold contests. The winning student from each district will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year! In addition, the winners and their two guests are invited to the nation's capital in the summer to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the winning artists from across the country and opening the 2008 "An Artistic Discovery" exhibition. Thousands of people visiting the nation's capitol, as well as Members of Congress and their staffs, are able to walk through the exhibit daily, viewing artwork from Congressional districts throughout the country—each piece highlighted with the name of the work and student artist.
Interested students and teachers should contact their congressional office ASAP for more information.

45. THEATER PERFORMANCES AT CASA MANANA CHILDREN’S THEATER
For over 40 years, Casa Mañana's Children's Playhouse has introduced children of all ages to the magic of live theatre. This tradition continues as Casa Mañana's Children's Playhouse proudly presents its 2008-2009 Season:
FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 8 -- Miss Nelson is Missing!
The students in room 207 just won’t follow the rules and are not being respectful to their teacher, Miss Nelson. One morning, Miss Nelson is mysteriously missing from school, which makes her students believe they have succeeded in driving her away. Their celebration quickly ends when the substitute teacher, the mean and scary Miss Viola Swamp, descends upon the classroom. You’ll love what happens next in this new musical based upon the popular children’s books by Harry Allard and James Marshall.
APRIL 3 - 19 -- Rockin' with Mother Goose
See Jack & Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Beep and more of those beloved characters as we present the classic Mother Goose rhymes to upbeat, catchy music. There are little life lessons tucked into each song to help teach children about good manners, safety and responsibility. Developed by local artists Brad Jackson and Alex Vorse, this world premiere musical puts a new spin on the classics to make your favorite rhymes come alive.
MAY 1 - 17 -- A Year with Frog & Toad
The Tony Award-nominated adaptation of the beloved Arnold Lobel classic stories where cheery Frog and grumpy Toad leap off the page to the stage just in time for blossoming, bird-chirping spring. With hilarious and tender songs inspired by snazzy jazzy music, this charming musical comedy gloriously suggests that having a very best friend for flying kites, racing sleds and baking cookies, is as good as it gets.
